Extended warranty and security system S40-V40 2001

I have recently ordered a V40, which will be delivered in early March. Normally, I would not even think about the manufacturer's extended warranty --- in general, they seem like a great profit vehicle for the manufacturer. But I've heard many tales of woe on this bulletin board concerning the 2000 model, and caution is beginning to kick in, even though I realize that people who post here are not a representative sample. For the 2001 V40, have there been enough problems to make this warranty a good idea? How much does it cost, and how many extra years does it provide? It was a big stretch to buy this car, and I won't have extra money to sink into maintenance.

Also, how good is the antitheft system that comes with the car? I doubt that this is a high-theft car, but I live in the Boston area, and such stuff "happens." I have a Lojack recovery system on my old car and am wondering if it would be a good idea to have one installed on the new Volvo --- or most likely just a waste of money.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Elizabeth,

I think that you should abandon the typical mentality that it is a..."great profit vehicle for the manufacturer"...that kind of thinking will not let you make the proper decision about this. So what if someone makes a profit? What is the % of profit (in your opinion) that your builder made when you bought your house? Or when you buy a pair of shoes do you know what profit is built into them (try anywhere from 50% to 100%)...or when you buy furniture...

All you have to do is think objectively "do I need it and is what I am going to get worth the price"??? It is a "calculated insurance charge" and if you see it that way then you can lay everything on the table and make the best decision FOR you.

I can tell you though that the V40s have been extremely reliable and don't let what you read here to instill any fears in you.

    Good luck!

    Yannis

Elizabeth, I live in Boston too and I can tell you, the car alarms are a little more than a minor annoyance when I hear them. I mean when a stiff wind blows half a dozen cars start blaring. This "overalarming" or crying "wolf" too much has effectively diminished the effect of a car alarm to nil. If someone wants your car they will take it alarm or not. Save your money in my opinion. Lojack I've heard is also very defeatable by driving the car into a shielded bunker for example or into an area that is not covered by receivers. You are correct in pointing out that Volvos are not high theft material (lucky for us), so just take heart in that. Also, from my own experience, if you get a car that blends in well colorwise, don't wash it more than average, don't put any flashy accessories on it and in general don't make it stand out from the crowd, the chances of it being stolen or broken into are greatly reduced. I usually keep nothing visible in the car. If you were to look inside my car you would only see a child booster seat, a road atlas in the back pocket of the front passenger seat and a cheapo pencil-style tire gauge in the door pocket. Not very interesting to break into the car like that.

    Good luck and enjoy!

The S/V40's do come with an audible security system plus immobilizer. I feel pretty confident with the Volvo security but it doesn't mean I won't be installing a secondary back-up alarm. Depends on what you have inside the car. If you're pretty much rolling stock then I would say the Volvo security system will do fine for your use.

      Carlos,

I need to send you some updated pictures :) I wouldn't see the point in upgrading your security system. First, there is no way they could hot wire this car! Need a Volvo key with the correct code to start this puppy. It could use a more sensitive detection system. Right now it doesn't seem to care if the car is shook. Third, would installing an aftermarket system confict with the current one?

Re: Extended warranty and security system S40-V40 2001

I guess you guys want the sort of Volvo alarm system we get here in Europe which has:

        - door and hood contacts

        - interior motion sensors

        - glass break sensors

        - tilt sensor

        - extra fuel pump and ignition block (next to immobilizer)

        - 'deadlock' door locks when locked with remote (locks can't be opened from inside or outside)

        - siren with integrated backup power supply

Some are optional in different countries, depending on insurance regulations, but a 'Class 3' system here in holland has most of these features.

Can't really improve much on this..

        Bye, Arno.

Arno, We get the same system over here in the States, though some of the items are extra.

Are these really options? Do you have any part numberS?

I know the rest of the stuff was, but I've never seen the fuel pump and ignition block thing (is that the immobilizer that's standard?) and I know the locks don't deadlock... Is that an option?

Ah. I was under the (mistaken) impression that the alarm system in the US only had the door/hood switches and nothing else.

            Bye, Arno.

        Anthony,

You need to send me some updated pictures! LOL! No way they can hotwire the car? Although this is VERY true, I will never underestimate a car thief. And I would like the motion sensor (my main reason for doing a secondary system) but I think i'll be integrating it into the secondary system whenever I do that.

And no, an aftermarket system would not interfere with the current security system, it would just be installed seperately as if the vehicle never came with an alarm system.

Keep in mind that you dont have to buy the extended warranty when you get the car. The Volvo VIP Plan recently changed how long you have to buy it, but I think it was up to 3 years after purchase, with certain mileage restrictions, but check to make sure when you're at the dealer.
