My New 850 - A Couple of Questions 850 1997

OK, needed a back up car and score and 850 sedan, non-turbo. Seems to be in nice shape, been searching around and learning as I'm normally on the RWD side, actually tried to find a rwd one in good condition, but they are old now. Anyway,

1. Owners manual says oil change is 5.6 quarts with filter, but could be 6 quarts, which is it? I know I can change it and figure it out, but I like to know this sh*t up front.

2. Timing belt, thought they were due at ~100 kmiles, but my owners manual says 70 kmiles and as I'm at 136 kmiles, it looks like I'll be doing this soon unless dealer can tell me it was done later. Conventional wisdom is to do it at 70 kmiles, correct? And, change tensioner, rollers and water pump at this mileage and time (no info on pump being changed). I'll stick with dealer for this stuff unless you guys can tell me the FCP (and others) have the OEM stuff.

Thanks

Mike

    My New 850 - A Couple of Questions 850 1997

    Hi Mike,

Welcome to the white blocks. I always bought 6 quarts, poured in 5 and after starting the engine, topped it off with the left over. I always reccomend using synthetic 10W30 with oil changes at 7K miles, it keeps the PCV cleaner.

    Use premium.

70K belt changes for your year. Tensioner is still good, rollers get replaced. The water pump only gets replaced when needed, usually around 200K. If the coolant is not good, the pump will wear faster.

FCP has OEM if you look hard. Tasca Volvo in RI has parts at 10% mark up, which is really good.

      My New 850 - A Couple of Questions 850 1997

      Klaus,

Thanks for input. Car is solid and never been hit, had reasonable maintenance, but I prefer full service records; however at this price there are some compromises.

Timing belt was bugging me, so before work I looked again and found a sticker on the TB cover. It was done at ~65 kmiles, but unfortunately in '02 or '03 (cant' recall at the moment). I think 8 yrs is about the limit, plus I'm sitting at 136 kmiles. So, it's due for its 3rd belt, thinking I do the tensioner if it does not look like OEM, and the rollers. If pump looks like OEM, I leave it alone (assumes no leaks/play).

I've done lots of TB's and this looks easier than my 1.8 turbo Golf. Write ups say you don't have to remove crank damper, but seems like with an impact gun you could take it off or at least pull it out a bit to get access (torquing nut back up could be a pain though). I've been marking the belt and transferring to new belt for my last few, and it seems like damper will prevent me from doing this. Any thoughts here?

      Mike

        Klaus,

I've used Tasca before, but forgot how competitive they are. Just checked, for TB, TB damper, the 2 roller/tensioners and a water pump, it's about 318! My local dealer is fair, but probably not that fair. Dropping the water pump makes it like 220! Really not going to beat that, of course, assumes not crank/cam seal leakage.

I would stop at IPD and get a cam lock tool. It is quite difficult to stretch the belt across the cams with out moving the exhaust a little.

You don't need to remove the crank wheel. Yes, it is hard to get the belt off, but it will come out and the new belt just slides on nicely. Some will just cut the old belt, what are you going to save it for anyway???

Do not replace the hydraulic tensioner, just the rollers. Might want to check the serpentine belt?

While the wheel is off, check the engine mount just rearward, left of the crank. They tend to crack.

            Klaus,

A bit confused on the hand grenade type tensioner as my VW has one and conventional wisdom is replace every time. Are you saying they are good for 200 kmiles, as I will have no idea if it was replaced at the last TB change. Guess I can always look at determine if it's the real deal or an aftermarket one.

            Mike

The new 'manual' tensioners in use since 1999 must be replaced every belt change. The older black hydraulic tensioners can last well over 200K. There are no after market hydraulic tensioners, there is no market for them.

All you really need is a belt and rollers.
