Another post on clunking 850

My '97 850 has 122K miles. It seems the previous owner hit a huge pothole or ran over something, because there was plenty of right side damage. I have replaced the right axle, the strut mount, and the strut on the right front. My good friend (ASE certified mechanic)swears the spring seat looks great, but I am wondering if that is not the cause of my continued right side front suspension clunking?

I also replaced the sway bar links and we did an overall inspection of the front end. Control arms/ball joints are tight. Everything else looks good. I have ordered a new rear engine torque bushing assembly because the entire engine moves when shifted into reverse or drive.

Am I going to have to pull the strut off once again (did mount first, then strut) and replace the spring seat? Is there anything else you can think of for us to check/replace while I am at it? I am dedicated to eradicating this clunk, even if it kills/bankrupts me.

Thanks!
RK

Got rid of the clunking yesterday by changing out the rubber spring seat. Installed the new rear engine bushing and now the car is a quiet as it can be. Checked all motor and transmission mounts and they look great.

It's generally the strut assy upper bushing that's the problem.

Did you check the right side (front) engine mount? Just to the rear of the crank pulley. A broken mount will make that noise also, and allow the engine to torque.

      Klaus:

Thanks for that heads-up. I should have remembered the engine or tranny mounts after replacing all on a 240 and a 740. They do clunk!

In addition to the clunk - which is occasional, I am also getting a weird metallic sound (brr-brr) that I think is a loose spring. I went ahead and ordered the spring seat (Boge - $25.00)today. I spoke with the garage that put in the strut (they also did an allignment, which was a botch job) and am afraid they may not have put everything together right.

My friend is going to disassemble the whole deal and put in the spring seat. The garage has agreed to reallign for free. While we have the right wheel off, we'll check the mount.
