96 850 wagon rear end sag, excess wear on inside of rear tires 850

went for tire rotation yesterday and shop said they couldn't do it due to excess wear on inside of tires on the rear.

took the car to a guy who does a lot of work on volvos and he suggested if tire discounters was any good they would have told me the rear end of the wagon was sagging and they would have told me what needed done to fix it instead of just trying to sell me two new tires.

maybe twice a year i put around 500 pounds of stuff in the rear, but only one person is in the car when i do this. normally the max in the rear is 250-275 pounds for 100-150 miles of travel no more than once a week. the shocks were replaced a couple of years ago and there is no clunking or noise one would expect from spent rear shocks.

any thoughts would be appreciated. and, no, tire discounters didn't suggest the vehicle needed a four wheel alignment, just two new rear tires.

thx in advance for your help!

found yesterday that the transverse is broken to the rt rr wheel not allowing for toe or camber adjustment and causing massive inner tire wear. started a new thread on brickboard to see if anyone knows how to repair a transverse. probably popped due to the rear ending as the wear to the tires and the sagging didn't start until after the accident. wasn't going to turn this accident into the lady's insurance, but now i have to. the will probably total out the car. just put a new motor in and work under the dash for the ac (evaporator, heater core, etc.)

You guys are killing me.
Yes, the volvo guy told me what he thinks the fix might be, but after bad experiences with all parties involved in car repairs i've learned to 'trust, but verify'. You're the 'verify' part.

Thanks for the link, but if that's what needs done then i might just keep bad tires on this car and run it like a truck being i just had the ac evaporator replaced and dropped a motor into this car. perhaps it's time to give up on it if each of my repairs is going to take 8 hours or more from here on out.

A question: the car was rear ended recently. could this have anything to do with the sag??? the rear bumper was broken and somehow the woman, after hitting our rear, also hit the rear quarter panel (if there is such a thing on a wagon) and then our back passenger door.

I think i'm going to head to the body shop to get their take on things and go from there.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance a rear-ender with that much damage to several places would have contributed to the problem! But the insurance company will probably want to total the car anyway ...

You took it to a guy who works on Volvos and he bad-mouthed the tire store. Okay.

If he works on Volvos and knows Volvos, did he bother to offer an explanation as to what the problem is?

If so, what did he say?

If the car is sagging, he should have been able to take a look and give you a quirky diagnosis.

he said the same things the other guys said. just wanted to verify and gather all ideas prior to sinking more $ into this brick.

If this is your 850 with 280K miles on it, time for new rear springs(HD). Also check the bushings for play at the end of the long part that goes to the opposite side(brain freeze).
