TURBO INTAKE HOSE COMPLETELY COLLAPSES! 850 1996

850 Turbo Wagon - 200K Miles

I was revving the engine just a bit from the engine bay after replacing the heater core, and noticed that if I blipped the throttle to wide open for just a moment, the air intake hoses (Inter cooler to throttle body & throttle body to intake manifold) would completely collapse, producing a whistling affect as air squeezed through the crushed hose. The hoses appear to be in good condition, but are a bit flexible. I am certain this condition is killing the engines performance from a stop.

Is there a spring insert available to keep the hose open?

or

Should I just replace them? If so, what type is recommended?

Thank you.

I would just replace them. I have never noticed that on my 1996 850 Turbo but I have 50k less miles than you. If you are worried about performance and have the money check out IPD they sell all of those hoses in blue silicone. I replaced the three hoses that go to the Turbo Control Sensor with the blue silicone and it was a great move.

You should replace the intercooler hoses. Fortunately, you are in a warm climate so you can opt for the reverse intercooler package. Not only does it keep the air cooler, it shortens the IC plumbing by a foot to give better response.

IPD sells the reverse kit($395) and http://www.stylinmotors.com/volvo.html sells the regular replacement with color. Of course, you can buy the replacement parts for a lot cheaper!

BUT, because the hoses collapse, you could also have an obstruction in the inter cooler itself. If you have a good drainage system, you could remove the top and bottom hoses, plug the bottom hole with duct tape, pour in some soapy water, and then flush with a garden hose.

Remember to replace the vacuum lines at the boost controller.

    EDIT:

    Is your air filter clean?
