Very impressive results. My questions - taking out one cat, it is called a three way, does that mean two more are inline or have we just taken out all emissions control? Will this blow inspection?

Re: Dyno test results posted S40-V40 2001

Good question.

There are (or in my case were) three catalytic converters inline on the 2001 Volvo S40. The catalyitic converter we removed was the second one, along with the cat we also removed the first muffler. Volvo's are the most enviromentally friendly vehicles on the road, it is our assumption that the vehicle will still pass emissions inspection. My opinion on the way the car sounds after the modification is that maybe (and I stress MAYBE) it's a little bit louder and has a deeper hum, but it's very hard to tell that the car has been modified by hearing, literally all of my friends say it still sounds stock.

Results look nice. I wonder what would happen if you replaced the rear muffler with a free-flow type. I heard that the one on the Phase-II model already does a lot better than the one originally used on the Phase-I cars though.

LOL!

Love the 'odd wheel' look.. :-P

Bye, Arno.

Re: Dyno test results posted S40-V40 2001

Arno,

I'm currently looking for a muffler that will optimize the exhaust system. I thought of a straight through but not too sure how that would work. I'd like a real muffler (you know with chambers) and basically just a high performance muffler. I was looking at the Laser mufflers (check em out at www.laser-jama.nl , dynomax is what the crew at the speed shop recommended, may end up going with that, but as I said not sure yet.

Yea, there are alot of Hondas around here that ride with two stock wheels on the front and two 18"-19" wheels on the rear, you know, all that horsepower those little engines produce, you gotta have a good thick tire to withstand the power !! LOL!!!!

Re: Dyno test results posted S40-V40 2001

Laser is usually seen here in europe as very, very 'budget' exhaust.. Perhaps they have a better reputation in the US, but here it's more a case of 'more noise' than real effect.

You can get a very good straight-through muffler. The TME set I have on my car uses that (you can look right through), but it's still very subdued in noise level.

You'll just get a bit more 'rumbling' sounds as the straight-through absorption mufflers mainly filter out the high(er) frequencies. Baffle-style mufflers often have a more 'tinny' sound as they leave high frequencies alone and take on the low frequencies.

Bye, Arno.

Heico have cool stuff, but usually a bit pricey. I got the LSD in my T4 from them and it works brilliantly. Most of their stuff is actually available through Volvo dealers across Germany, so that should give you an impression of their quality.

If any of you are interested.. I think I still have the Heico rear muffler here somewhere (bolts up to the stock front exhaust pipe), but I need to check to make sure it's still there. Anyone who wants it can have it for shipping cost only. It has been used for a while, but as it's stainless steel it should be no problem.

I don't know how it will look/fit on the phase-II cars though..

Bye, Arno.

Re: Dyno test results posted S40-V40 2001

From what i've heard about Heico they are a very respectable company in Europe that develop high quality aftermarket/high performance parts for Euro cars, specifically Volvo. The stuff is just so damn expensive here in the U.S.

By the way Arno, I took a look at the Dynomax mufflers all the ones I saw had a 1 1/4" inlet, I need 1 1/2"!! Gonna keep looking.

Have a good day everyone

Carlos

Re: Dyno test results posted S40-V40 2001

That's strange, according to my contact Laser is supposed to be pretty good, especially since they do alot of work with the superbike teams. It seems like dynomax might be my ultimate choice, but i'm not sure yet, i'm so picky when it comes to this type of stuff. I mean I am going to be putting a decent sound system in the car and just cause I can turn it up loud doesn't mean I should go and make my exhaust loud. In any case I can always go for a good coffee can muffler LOL!!

Re: Dyno test results posted S40-V40 2001

I have used Dynomax Ultra Flow type mufflers on many of my cars. IMHO, they are the best I have used to date. They allow a nice deep rich and mellow rumble and don't project the highs too much. The sound level is kept down a bit by the factory converter, so if you take it off, there will be more noise. I love the Ultra flow systems enough to endorse them, which is not a common practice for me. They are a great alternative to a complete custom-engineered manifold back system, which are big bucks! They also seem to have enough different sizes and styles in the Ultra Flow product line to ensure that everyone gets a great fit. I have used them on my '95 Dakota w/318, '93 dodge shadow 3.0 mitsu engine, '94 accord ex, '92 shadow w/2.5L turbo, '68 dodge charger w/440. Each car gained significant mid-high end improvements. The torque on the accord suffered a little, but the gain on the top end was worth it. The noise level was barely noticeable on all installs except the Dakota with 318 V8. That truck sounded like a new camaro when it was done. Just thought that I would share with you some of my experiences. Thus far, I have yet to do any performance mods to my 850 T, but dynomax is in the plans for it.

Prospero
