Engine codes ,will fail emissions.

Help.Help. Is Claus out there? I have a 1998 S70. Have check engine light on.
codes read as follows, P0422 P0442 P0455. Where do I start? have to go through emissions within the month for re-registering the car, and want to know where to look first. I can do most the work myself. STupid question, but if I were to clear the codes before going to emissions, would the car pass without fixing it for now? The check engine light does not come on immediately after clearing the codes, but a few miles down the line.
thanks for any and all help.

Hi there, I don,t know what state you are in but in Ma. last year i did some emission repairs to my daughter's '98 s70. I cleared the fault codes and drove the car around to reset the readiness codes after repair. Long story short, the codes did not reset in time to get a new inspection sticker so I decided to run it through anyway and at the very worst buy more time for the codes to reset(60 days in Ma.). Result: car passed it's inspection without any problem. If you are a gambling man you may get away with a quick clear of the codes followed by an immediate visit to the inspector.

So as I understand, if I cannot find any broken hoses, etc that I could do a quick repair, I can reset/clear the codes and there a descent chance I pass without actually fixing anything right now? Thanks for you and Klaus.

Klaus, you the man! I will check these out. I noticed the muffler sounded kind of loud, like a baffle inside might be going. No rust,no holes, no leaks that i could detect. I tried blocking the exhaust tail pipe to check for leaks in the system but could not find any. Could this be related to my check engine light and codes coming up?

Unless you had a leak in the exhaust ahead of the rear O2 sensor, no fault code would be generated. A leak before the cat will cause sensor problems.

P0422 Main catalyst efficiency below threshold

Usually the rear 02 sensor reading bad. Look for vacuum line leaks around the intake manifold. Replace the rear O2 sensor as a last resort because that costs money.

P0455 general large leak of the Evap system.

My 1998 V70 has the charcoal canister in front of the left front wheel. The problem was next to the fuel filter, a hose had split. I replaced it with a 4" length of 1/4inch fuel line.

Klaus, I did find a leak/broken hose in the rear, near the fuel filter. I replaced that, cleared the codes, and the car passed emissions.
Five days later the check engine light went on again. And now I have po442 and po 422 showing again. Would you at this point try replacing the rear O2 sensor?, and why not the front O2 sensor.

I do not like to replace sensors unless I know they have failed. Many scanners have the capability to show O2 readings, the rear O2 sensor is trying to say that what is coming through the CAT is not 'clean'. Unfortunately, there are soooo many reasons that the front O2 sensor readings mess up and leave a dirty CAT flow.

When I intitally 'fixed' my broken hose by the fuel filter, I used a silicon vacuum line I had left over on the bench. That worked fine all winter, but when the temps climed, the error came back. That part of the system is not under vacuum, it is under pressure as the gasoline vapors heat up and the vacuum line couldn't handle it. A piece of fuel line solved the problem.
