2000 used S70 S70 2000

Hello all;
I am considering buying a 2000 S70 GLT to replace my recently totaled 1995 850 GLT. Can anyone tell me if this model needs to run on premium gas as in 93 octane? It looks to be a turbo so that is my reason for asking.

Thanks!

Klaus, last question for the day. I plan to take the car to a mechanic before making an offer to the dealer. If you had your druthers, would you take it to a Volvo dealer or an independent shop that specializes in Swedish cars?
Either way I am paying for the once over.

Your choice. The dealer's mechanic will come up with a nice list, much of which can be ignored. The Indie will have a smaller list, but they will be important. Both should charge around $100.

If the dealer serviced the car, then they will have service history.

It will run on 89 octane. The knock sensors will prevent you from running high rpms on full boost. If you use 'regular' gasoline, expect dirty injectors and over-rich timing.

Klaus, would this be remedied by adding some brand of octane booster?
Not sure if there is a quality one out there that would not harm the CAT converter.

If the shift lever positions ar PRD3L, then it is a 4 speed.

Octane booster?? In most of the USA, the difference in price for regular Vs 89octane is 10 cents. That's $1.80 for a full tank. The octane booster costs more than that, besides not having any cleaners added to the mix.

If you cannot afford an additional $1.80 for 360+ miles, then you shouldn't buy a Volvo.

Klaus, you can get nasty if you so desire. I can handle it.
I was hoping however to hear back in your previous response why you think the 5 spd trans is not as reliable as the 4 spd. Just curious.

The early 5 speeds, 2000-2002 had all sorts of software problems which lead to hardware problems. Hard shifts, torque converter not releasing, and the stance from the factory that the fluid never needs flushing. Many owners found themselves stranded between 50-120K miles, after warrantee.

              Hi Klaus:

Were these software problems addressed with upgrades? I am curious, as I have a 2000 V70 with about 133K on it. This is my first foray into FWD Volvos after a decade and a half of RWD ones...

Yes, there are multiple upgrades on the 5 speed trannies, free.

                  Klaus,
I have already forgotten but did you give me advice to totally stay away from any 5 speed automatic trans? due to the above posts of the software issues.

If I got the software upgrades, would that resolve and help the trans to work properly for sometime?

and how does one obtain these FREE upgrades? Are we talking software upgrades?

"free" depends on the dealer and other work performed there. Most 2000's had the 4 speed, it is 2001-2002 that I would stay away from.
