In the last two days I've noticed a creeking at slow speeds. The noise is coming from the front left wheel. Whenever I push down on it creeks. The shock is only about a month old so I am assumming it's not the shock because I've never head a shock creek. Could this be the spring? What else could possibly be making a creeking noise when I push down on it?

It also could be the upper shock bearing mount that screws down on top of the shock. I just replaced all 4 shocks with Bilsteins and still get a rattle sound over certain bumps. This part (Volvo part no. 9461728) is about 25.00 and is sort of akin to a rubber bushing. I will replace mine and let you know if this remedies it.

Steve- I put Bilsteins on my '94 855 about 15,000 miles ago. Recently I have been hearing a clunk everytime I go over a sharp bump. I replaced my ball joints at the same time as the shocks and just did the sway bar link ends suspecting these, but no luck. I had read posts re: the strut mounts and did the rears as they looked beat, but when I went to get fronts my dealer said don't bother.

Why are you replacing your mounts?

I do not feel any rattling, just a deep clunk. Maybe the sway bar bushings themselves? Gotta get under there and look when it's a bit warmer out!

BTW- since this clunking started, I have been regretting putting Bilsteins on. The ride seems much harsher and handling does not really seem any better than stock. Do you like your new shocks?

the metal bushing/sleeve that attaches to the strut shaft was completely ripped/seperated from the rest of the spring seat.

The noise was a clunk when going over medium to large bumps,potholes,etc. I had a similar thing happen to my Saab, so I had an idea what the problem might be. IPD also carries the bushings.

Well I WD40 everything and still got the noise. I took the tire off again and isolated it to the A-Pillar. I had to tighten the bold connecting it to the shock and this cured the problem!

I've changed both of these 1 month ago, but the sound is different. i'm going to try too look for loose items and maybe WD-40 some stuff.

This is very likely your sway-bar end link (very common for these to wear out and cause a creeking/clunking noise)...see post farther down the page from last week...

When is the last time you jubed your chassis?

I've never lubed my Chassis where's that and how do I do that?

For one, the steering stop. The little plastic sort of diamond shaped thingy on the front side of the lower A arms. It likes a thin coating of axle grease to keep it quiet. I will have to look at the bottom side of my 850 to see if it is the one that had grease fittings on the ball joints and other areas. As I recall, there are a fewq areas that like fresh lube now and again.

I've greased these stops many months ago, but I thought this is only a problem when I turn. Does anyone know if shocks creek when they get old? When you say fresh lube could this imply a bit of WD-40 to test the area and then apply a thicker silicon grease?
