False Security Siren Activation S80 2000

A very strange situation arose today in a parking lot after locking the S80 securely and wandering off to the grocery store.

After leaving the grocery store I heard a car siren sounding and glanced over at my S80. Its 4-way emergency flashers were active and so I proceeded over to the car with caution. As I approached the car the siren stopped and the 4-way flashers stopped to flash also.

Nothing appeared to be wrong and the car was still locked and there was no evidence of wrong doing.

I unlocked the car and emptied the groceries into the trunk. I then returned my grocery cart to the store and as I did and while passing by a 2001 Volvo V70 the V70's alarm went off. I was a bit startled but went on and return my cart to the store.

Upon returning (after just a few moments) the 2001 V70's siren was still sounding but then stopped. There was a women passenger in the front of the V70 and I motioned to her that I wanted to talk. She rolled her window down some and I said that my S80's siren had sounded a little while back also and was unsure why.

She said she thought my S80 siren had started at the same time her husband had got out of their car and locked the V70 with her in it -- presumably she wanted to stay in the car.

Anyhows, we parted company convinced that somehow both our remotes and/or the S80 and V70 computer security systems interferred with each other. It all sounded very strange and certainly more than coincidental.

My S80 and the V70 were some 50 to 70 feet apart and there was a clear unobstructed path between them.

There was a similar instant of my security siren sounding falsely when I was parked in a freeway rest stop a few months back. Never was able to figure out why -- but maybe another Volvo was lurking around ;-)

Any comments and/or ideas as to what may have occurred -- also has any other person experienced or heard of a similar false siren alarm for the S80 and/or 2001 V70?

Regards... Barry

Re: False Security Siren Activation S80 2000

Your problem may have been caused by the 01 V-70. They have a redesigned upper electronic module (remote signel reciever/rear view mirror) and remotes. Some remotes have been found to activate the alarms in other nearby cars. The problem lies in the 01 V-70, and is corectable by either software download or UEM replacement and software reload. Thats not to say your car didn't have a problem. However, I would bet it was caused by the V-70. Hope this helps.

Re: False Security Siren Activation S80 2000

Thanks Bob for your reply.

Are you saying my S80 needs software updates or the 01 V-70. I think I read your reply to say the V-70 requires the software updates. If this is so I guess I'll be(aware) of 01 V-70s for awhile in the parking lots etc. ;-)

Re: False Security Siren Activation S80 2000

The 01 V-70 is the one with the problem,as well as sticking remote buttons. Had one in the shop yesterday. No remote functions at all. Still waiting for the pin codes from Volvo so I can reprogram them.
