Speed limited at ? ALL 1994

Anybody know what the absolute top speed (speed govoner bypassed) is for a 1994 850 Turbo with auto trans? The car came factory equiped with sport package and 16" wheels. I think that the tires are "Z" rated. Further, what does the factory limit the speed at with the OEM ECU and how does it react when you hit the limit. I drove a Concorde which at 122 the motor felt like it was missing and then failed to accelerate till the speed fell to 55MPH. Once there I could accelerate again. Did it twice just to see if it would perform again. Please tell me my 850 won't do this as it really made me blush.

TIA

Prospero

147 MPH. This is the number that Car and Driver got in a test of the 855T. They use electronic equipment for testing, so I would believe thier data over speedometer readings.

I know that they had an R once too, but I cannot find the Road Test. I think it was in the low 150's. Aerodynamics are going to hold these cars back, not a lack of power. I would like to see what an S60T5 could do ungoverned.

Rs are limited to 155mph. The S60 should be able to reach that and maybe a few more since the Coefficient of drag is significantly lower than that either the 850 or of the S70.

The limit I saw was 155 for the 95 850 Turbo and it was stated that that was drag limited. That would be consistent with the observed behaviour of 260 KPH and rising past red line by Sin - he probably had a really nice wax job to cut the coefficient of friction...

hahahaha, I want a wax job like Sin's!

Re: Speed limited at ? ALL 1994

I don't know how accurate my speedo is, but I've red lined my 94' 855T in final gear before. When I do it, I hold it for a for a couple seconds. It's really hard to find stretches of highway without cops, traffic and good road surface. The engine actually revs past the red line if you keep your foot planted. In fact, my speedo has actually gone past 260km/h at about 6150rpm. If my speedo is correct (and I seriously doubt it was), it was at about 260km/h or about 161.6mph. And the speed was still climbing at a very very slow rate. I'm assuming the car will do something closer to 250km/h or about 155.4mph.

I have also taken a 2001 Mazda Protege LX Touring Edition with a 160km/h'ish electronic speed limiter to the limit so I know what hitting a speed limiter feels like. In this car, it doesn't feel so much as if the engine is misfiring. To me, it feels simply like the throttle has been cut from my control.

I think the common feeling of misfiring is the tranny and torque convertor causing slight jerking feelings when the limiter is hit and the throttle control is bypassed by the ecu.

      OK, Sin,

Now you've got to share the location of the road where you found aplace with those ingredients - lack of traffic, lack of cops and got road surface. We'lll all meet there for a picnic...

I'm in Nevada and occassionally find a good stretch - I just have trouble getting the financial nerve to make the run...

Re: Speed limited at ? ALL 1994

From what I know, 1994 & 1995 model year 850 turbos do not have speed governors and run all the way to their theoretical rev-limit in 4th gear (auto-tranny). I have yet to prove this myself but I remember reading several auto mags at the time who did run 850 turbos and T5Rs all the way to 150 and even 152 MPH. I am unsure whether or not the '96 and '97 850 turbos had limiters put in because I know somewhere along the way they implemented them on the S70s (I think the limiters are set at around 130 MPH on these models).

Re: Speed limited at ? ALL 1994

I think the speed limiter is 143 or 149 mph thru 98 models

(U.S. market) for turbos. Low 120s after 98. I'm not

sure how it reacts (probably similar to hitting the

rev limiter). After-market ECUs typically remove the

    top speed limiter.

At 143mph your engine would be spinning at about 5200 RPM

(based on the photo Dave has posted showing the speedo

pegged -- not from my experience).

Your tire rating should be on the side of the tire.

Re: Speed limited at ? ALL 1994

Thanks all for the input. I have had my 850 to 130 thus far and was just wondering when it was going to cut out. It is simply great how stable the car feels at that speed. If it wasn't for me tensing up like a girl her first time out, I think that I could have gone all the way. One thing for sure was that the car is not very aero dynamic. I could feel the wind blasting the poor car at 120+. This is the only car that I feel comfortable making any sort of turn in at over 120 MPH. I just hate the feeling of the rear wanting to come out so easily. That is my next project. Thanks again all, now I know.
