Leaky sunroof 850 1995

Hello all,

I have a 1995 850 wagon with a sunroof that is leaking. After a rain, the headliner around the driver's side visor and windshield pillar are soaked. I assume that the perimeter seal around the sunroof has failed but I'm surprised that the drains have not handled the leakage. They are not plugged as far as I can tell. Given the location of the water I wonder if the drain itself could have a leak.

I'm looking for some guidance as to what I am up against. Best ways to troubleshoot? Pull down the headliner? Will I have to replace the sunroof or can the seals alone be replaced? Who best to look at this job, a body shop?

Thanks.

You are the best resource to determine where the leak is. Repairing it is another matter.

I suspect that the water is entering the car by draining through the area between the glass and the felt seal. I went to a very good salvage yard to replace the glass w/seal, picking through about 6 different SR's and finding one that did not have any rust.

You can replace the seal if you have a friend in the glass business that can provide the correct glue. First, the old seal needs to come off and the old glue sanded off. Then the rust must be removed, the metal primed, and repainted with a couple of coats of paint. That is a 3-4 day process, which is why I replaced mine.

Water that comes in because the felt no longer maintains a close gap with the roof, normally enters the drains and pours out the bottom of the car. This is how the roof is supposed to perform.

Erie Volvo, for east coasters, is a reputable yard. Call them and ask if they have a glass only (includes felt) replacement. Any year 850 will work. I am not sure if the 1998-2000 will fit, but they should.
