'06 V50 T AWD: A dog compared to '96 850 T? V50

Hello,
I have a '96 850 Turbo and am looking for a newer, smaller model. I drove a 2006 V50 T AWD and, while it drove nicely, it was a dog compared to my old 850. Honestly, it was like running on 4 cylinders.
My question: Don't these have the same engine and shouldn't the car that's 1 years newer be peppier than my old 850?

The car you tested has a light pressure turbo and AWD. You cannot compare it to your 1996 with 222bhp and only FWD. The V50 weighs a lot more, drives all 4 wheels all of the time, and has less than 200bhp.

You would need to get a Volvo with a T5 engine to compare.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, the car is a T5: http://www.herbchambers.com/ou/herb-chambers/2110_234/inv/2006VolvoV50/BM13940A

Either the weight and AWD just make it sluggish or it needs a serious tune-up.

The only tune up you can do is new spark plugs. The V50 T5 has 218bhp, the 96 Turbo has 222bhp but all of it goes to the front. You would have thought that the V50 T5 would have the same performance as the S60 T5, but that car has much more bhp. I guess the V50 isn't considered a 'go fast' car.

I followed up with the seller who said, they took it to the dealer who said that "one of the turbo exhaust vaults was sticking, it was not opening and closing properly." I'm not a mechanic so I don't even know if that makes sense but that sounds like it could definitely impact performance. I'm planning to go drive it again.

A broken waste gate actuator will cause the turbo to not create much pressure and effectively null the performance, kind of like driving without a turbo.

I would have a mechanic check it before I bought it. Even a dealer only charges $100 for a check up. Of course, a dealer will find a truckload of faults and it will be up to you to determine which are serious and which are bogus.

I drove one a few years ago. The footwell was awfully tight with three pedals for my Size 13s and that's why I didn't buy one. I thought the performance was comparable to my T5.

Eventually I bought a BMW wagon. With three pedals.

Interesting. Oh well, I'm going to have to look for something else. Maybe a V70. I don't really want AWD anyway. I'd prefer to get better MPH.
          Thanks for the replies.
