Relay name and purpose 850

There is a relay that, if one is facing the vehicle with the hood up, is directly in front of the oil dipstick (which would be between where you are standing and the dipstick) connected to the fan shroud, and has three connectors on it. What's causing me concern is that this relay is cracked lengthwise completely across, and apparently someone took electrical tape and wrapped it around the relay to hold it together. Since I don't know its purpose it's difficult to say whether I need to visit the junkyard and find one, buy a new one, or leave it be, since vehicle has been and is running reasonably well. Thanks for your input.

If its on the passenger side of the shroud, it is the radiator fan relay. You could Pick-n-Pull one, but if your fan is still working properly, there's no need.

      ALL 97 850 Relay names 850

Since we're on the subject, there's one on the drivers side of the shroud as well. What is that one? And, is there a diagram that identifies the various locations and purpose of the relays on the 97 Volvo 850? I used to have a 740 and learned the value of carrying spare relays (particularly fuel pump). One of the worse case scenarios is to need a new relay and be stranded on Saturday evening, with no help in sight until Monday morning, not to mention the cost from Volvo dealership. So I'd like to familiarize myself and acquire at least one of them each in the event the need arises to check or replace. Thanks.

The one on the drivers side of that shroud is the main relay. Without it working properly, your car won't start, no fuel injectors amongst other things. Grabbing spares at the junkyard is never a bad idea. I think I have a big tote of spare items for my 850, most of which I'll likely never use. But, as you said, in the off event my fuel pump goes at night and I have to be somewhere in the morning, I'm prepared. A spare fuel pump relay (located under the cover for the fuses drivers corner of engine bay, number 103) should almost be required for these 15+ yr old cars..
