Loud Exhaust System on 1998 S70 Non Turbo S70

Everyone raves about how great the 98 S70s are. I had a 98 GLT for over 10 years and loved it until the tranny went. I got a 98 non turbo and it has been a good car except for the exhaust noise. I replaced the entire system( Bosal cat and muffler) including the manifold. I even added another muffler at the end(a new muffler for a 740). Still too loud. What gives here? From what I understand, the turbo is much quieter because of the back pressure and also because it uses a cast iron manifold opposed to the stainless pipes in the non turbo.

ALL Volvos have cast iron exhaust manifolds and stainless steel exhaust pipes/mufflers. That's why they typically last so long, mine has 187K on it.

The 940/740/240 etc all have mufflers and resonators to keep the noise down. My turbo only has a muffler and there is noise at WOT only.

All Volvos do not have cast iron manifolds. The non turbo units have stainless steel pipes which apparently are louder than the cast iron ones. My 2000 V70 non turbo also has stainless pipes.

Bosal is a pretty good aftermarket brand. It is not as quiet as an OEM exhaust system. Based on the "miniscule" amount I've learned about the FWD/AWD cars, when time comes to replace the exhaust system on my 95 I'll bite the bullet and go OEM.

I'm hoping that Tasca has good prices...:)

You are probably right. If I had to do it over again, I would just get the exhaust system from a Volvo dealer. The cat is outrageous from a dealer--about $1200. The Bosal cat is $400. The stainless muffler is no longer available. What dealers sell is probably the Starla muffler. Tasca has pretty good prices.

I bet the cat from Tasca is cheaper than $1200. Now I'm curious, I'll have to check it out...

The stainless muffler is really history? Then I too would consider Bosal. Did you get your system from FCP Groton?

I got my Bosal cat and muffler from eEuroparts.com. I have a 2000 V70 non turbo and the exhaust system is original and is very quiet. They do have a resonator at the end. All I can say is that the loud Bosal exhaust is unacceptable IMO.
