Trade S70 for S80 S80 1999

Hello, I would appreciate any advice as to how to go about trading my 2000 S70 with 21,000 miles to an S80(1999 model). I am concerned about the lack of side curtain airbags on the S70. This is my motivation in the trade. How much more would I be expected to pay for the S80 with similiar mileage, but a year older. The S70 is in excellent condition with the Winter package, leather, sunroof, and alloys. Also how has the S80 done in the ratings?

Re: Trade S70 for S80 S80 1999

There are a lot of used 99 S-80s for sale for a good reason. Lots of problems. Oil leaks, transmission failures, cold start problems, Performance problems, suspension noises/klunks, climate control problems, etc. As far as I know, the 99s came with IC (inflateable curtain) And yes, they do have a lot if "integrated circuits" There are aprox 16 on board computers that control most of the electric stuff. Even the inside rear view mirror is a control unit. I would strongly advise against the 99.

Re: Trade S70 for S80 S80 1999

Bob, can you provide us with some statistical evidence that there are a "lot of used 99 S-80s for sale"? I happen to drive a 99 and I'm very happy with it. I have never had an oil leak, cold start problem, climate control problem etc.. I know that over the past couple of years there have been a handful of repeat posters here who experienced difficulties with their S-80s and VCNA, enough so that they got rid of the vehicle.

I know that I don't seem to be able to find many used S-80s in Canada over the internet and I would be curious to learn better ways of looking for them.

If, on the other hand, your statement stems from a bad experience with one, then perhaps you could predicate your comments with a brief statement of that, so we know where you are coming from. I sure would hate a label being attached to the 99 S-80 that was undeserved!

Can you enlighten me?

Jim

Aren't we missing the big picture here boys? The 1999 S80 DOESN'T EVEN HAVE IC!!! IC was added to the 2000 MY cars around the same time the new V70 was intro'd. The 2001 MY S80 was the first car in history to receive top marks from all three major independents IN THE SAME YEAR. EURO-NCAP, US-NCAP and IIHS all gave this car their highest allowable scores.

You are mistaken about the Inflatable Curtain (IC). My 1999 S80, build date 04/99, has the IC as do all S80s.

Thanks Tom. You are ABSOLUTELY right. I think I pulled a little cranial vapor lock back there on Saturday. Too much egg nog or something.

I thought S80s have lots of IC (integrated circuits).

If you have access to any insurance industry or NHTSA data that indicates that any type of side airbag and/or side curtain airbag have any effect at all on driver death rates or injury rates, I would appreciate it if you could post the rerference here.

As to the 1999 S80.....it did make the Consumer Reports "Used Cars to Avoid" list because of reliability problems.

Dave

If you check the history of the BB you will see that the 1999 S80 was very problematic. I have a 2000 and very happy, but the 1999's have had their share of problems. Let the buyer beware!

You can try researching this at

http://www.kbb.com

or

http://www.edmunds.com

Used car prices vary so much by location, condition/care, seller, and options that giving any sort of answer would be almost meaningless.

Good luck.
