Elusive Coolant Leak. Where is it Leaking!! V70-XC70 2004

2004 V70 Stick Non-Turbo. I have been losing coolant for a long time. It is not a giant leak, but it will set off the light every few hundred miles. Of course the sensor goes off when it is even a few ounces low. I have tried and tried and I can not find the leak. I took it into a shop today, and they put pressure into the system and after an hour there was no loss. They put it on the lift and still could not find anything. I know that it is an external coolant leak because I can smell it, and I have seen it as well. When I pulled into my driveway a few weeks ago in a foot on snow there was a long streak of bright green deposited on top of the snow. I have checked around the hoses and heater lines and I can find no leak???? I cant figure it is the radiator or that would show up when in the shop and pressurized and on a lift.

Do the freeze out plugs leak on these motors?

Have you checked the coolant overflow cap gasket??? I assume that was off and not part of the system pressure test.

need to put the car on ramps, remove the plastic engine shield at the bottom and look at the radiator, especially the seams around the plastic tank on the sides of the radiator.

The location on the floor can be an indicator to where the leak might be. For instance, a leak by the passenger fron tire might indicate a water pump. A leak right in between the car or just above the shifter location, might indicate a bad heater core (you might actually be able to smell the antifreeze). A leak at the front of the, it is most likely a bad radiator. Radiators normally begin to fail after 6-7 years.

Hello woodstock, Since you saw a long streak of green coolant I'd suspect the heater core. The streak you saw was likely caused by the drip tube which we know drains off the condensed water caused by the A/C system. In your case I'd bet coolant collected in the "catch pan" and just drained out the tube. Kira
