roof strips are deteriorating 850 95

the two black plastic or whatever strips that go from the front windshield to the back windshied are badly deteriorating. My dealer laughed at me when I inquired about coverage under corrosion and said it would cost $350 to fix. Anyone with same problem that 1. did it yourself

2 Got it covered under corrosion protection.

Re: roof strips are deteriorating 850 94

    Hello!

Interestingly enough, I had one of my roof strips start to flake and lose it's paint. The other strip has never had any trouble at all.

I tried several things (1) applying a flat black / gray paint -- This didn't stick to the strip material, and looked awful. (2) Applying the flat black paint and then putting a clear-coat layer over it -- same results. (3) Using crazy glue to adhere the flaking paint back onto the roof strip - - again, it just flakes off anyway.

Finally, I purchased a new roof strip from my dealer for about $125 or so, and installed it myself. It's a very easy installation, so don't bother to pay someone $50 to do it.

The replacement strip has been fine ever since, and my remaining original strip is still perfect, leading me to belive that the problem must have been in how the strips were painted at the factory.

I have had them replaced on two cars. Both around 200 dollars at a local paint and body shop. Thats really the best way to have them fixed. 200 included the end caps too.

Re: roof strips are deteriorating 850 95

Sorry to but in on this thread, but I have a question. Charles, did the body shop use Volvo original or other brand strips? And was that $200 each side or each car? Also, are they made of the same material as the OEM ones? Also, any special tools used to do the job? Were they fastened with clips or glue or press fit? I want to replace mine, but don't trust many people with my baby. Last shop that had my car over night I caught their service writer taking his girl out to dinner in it. He said that he wanted to be sure that the brake job it was in for really need to be done. Yeah, right! Needless to say, the owner was on the phone the next morning offering me an apology and discount.

They were 200 for both. They were orginal strips and they install in about 10 minutes with no tools. I would do it yourself if I were you.

Thanks, I will do it during my spring detail. BTW, love your site, very helpful. If I take pictures during the replacement, would you like to have them to post in bay 13?

Re: roof strips are deteriorating 850 95

Unfortunately I have a similiar issue with the roof strips. The driver side is much worse than the passenger. If I replace it (~200 per side) I probably need to both.

Is there another solution? Aftermarket roof racks to cover up the problem, and provide flexibility.

I used 3M outdoor industrial tape (black) and just relined over the peeling strips. Looks as good a new. If you can imagine using electrical tape, this is similar to what it looks like. Has withstood 1.5 years in the Florida sun with no problems or discoloration. A $5 fix.

Steve had the same idea as I did. last winter I took a single edge razor blade and trimed the old off. cleaned with thinner and put on 3m stripping tape 3/4" wide in satin black # 72893 ordered it from are local Auto Paint and Glass store. I have alot left so we dechromed the window trim on my son's bmw 525i. 2weeks ago i buffed the volvo with compound and polish and the 3m tape stayed on undisturbed. the satin color matches the rubber trim perfectly.....I have 50' left on the roll!

Depending on your car color you may get away with what I did. Autozone sells inch and a half wide black detail tape. 7 bucks a roll and it does both sides. I peeled all the loose old rubberized covering put the tape on it and it looks very nice. It is not a 'purist' fix but my friend who notices details hadn't noticed. The price is cheaper than new rails and the tape has been on for over 2 years and still looks great. My car is garaged, but it has made it through the tough winter no problem. I can buy a lot of tape over the years at 7 bucks a pop if I ever need to replace it.
