Cabin climate control question V70-XC70 1998

I have noticed a weird thing happening with the automatic climate control. If I set the climate control at the temperature I want (usually 68-72), I notice that, during winter, the car warms up as it should as the engine warms, but then, after about 10 minutes or so of driving, the temperature falls, and I have to keep steadily turning up the temperature dials to maintain a comfortable cabin temp. For example, if I start it out set at 68, it will warm up, level off, and then cool down until I have to turn the dial to about 78 to keep it relatively warm. Similarly, during summer, I would set the temp at, say, 72, but the AC would continue to cool the cabin unless I either turned up the dial or manually worked the fan (requiring constant adjustment). Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Try cleaning out the temperature sensor. It is behind the grill to the left of the ACC unit and beside the sunroof control switch. Mine was full of lint. Carefully clean it out taking care not to break the fine wires inside. Q-tips work OK. There is a small fan back there to pull air in for the temperature measurement.

I did this: I wonder if I "cleaned" it too hard and broke it. Might be time for a new one. Thanks.

If you broke the tip of the sensor, or bent it too far because it is fragile, the sensor would no longer record the cabin temp and the heat would either be on or off. I don't think it would cause the cabin to heat up and then cool off.

So long as the yellow lights of death don't blink at engine startup, your ECC thinks everything is functioning properly.

You might have a mixing flap for the heat that is slowly closing when it warms up. If you turn up the temperature dial when the heat turns off, are you getting heat again? Does the blower speed increase?
