Best Model Year V70-XC70

Fellow Bricksters.
Looking to add to my already 5 boxes in the driveway.
Looking for a wagon.
Is there a favourite model year of V70 or is there a model year I should be weary of.
Or perhaps another model entirely like an 850 or something
I have heard mixed stories on the early Folvo days.
I do not own anything newer than my 98 S90 and do all of my own service
Thanks

99 was great but hungry for maintenance V70-XC70

My 99, which is recently deceased due to being rear-ended by a cell phone addict, served well but went through a death cycle where the Electronic Throttle Module and the ABS module died within three weeks of each other. The A/C deflated, the master door switch broke and so did its replacement and two slave switches. A timing belt replacement saw that the water pump was crusty around the impeller shaft so that had to go also. Struts, shocks and rotors all around too. This all occurred in the miles between 120K and 160K. Volvo reimbursed me for the ETM due to a lawsuit over this part which was $785 I think. Check original brake hoses for cracks

    Thanks for all your replies.
is a 99 with 5 speed manual a bad idea?

Wow, can you find a manual transmission 1999? Jump on it unless it is trashed out from neglect, rust, or other problems. Of course manual is less complex. My daughter has the family '99 with manual transmission and it has served all of us very well. Gasoline mileage is still in the high 20s on the interstate. She uses 93 octane gasoline and occasionally adds a can of Ventil Sauber before a fill-up Even the ETM is original.

Getting into the higher mileage range at 160,000m
        Seems to be well maintained.
May be visiting it today or tomorrow

Anything i should look for. Are they all the 5cyl?
        Thanks

          All 850's and V70's through 2007 (I believe) are 5 cylinder. N/A and a variety of turbos.

Bought my 95 850 with 161k last year. Best used car I've ever bought! Bought my 90 240 with the same mileage and through its 1st year + of ownership the 850 has cost me less to maintain than the 240 did in its 1st year + of ownership. Needless to say I hope this trend continues...:)

With these cars it's all about proper maintenance. I see you own an S90 so you understand. Think of the V70 as a FWD S90 with a cylinder lopped off.

I love manual trannies, less to go wrong. But 1999 also came with electronic throttle and individual coil over plugs, along with VVT.

Darn, I was going to say my 1998 R would be a good fit, but getting it to CDN specs would be too hard :>)

I like the 1998 V70. Next up would skip me all the way to 2004+ XC70. Avoid the 2001 cars, all of them. If you want AWD, please look at 2004+ with the Haldex system.

FWIW it is my understanding that Volvo's of that era don't require anything to get them in shape for Canadian regulations except you have to turn the daytime running lights on full time with the little screw switch on the headlight switch module.

The consensus here seems to be that 1995-97 850's and the 98 V70's are the best DIY cars. They have fewer electronics and seem to be cheaper to maintain than the newer cars. Plus they are a blast to drive!
