Cost of AC repair S70 1998

Hi Folks.

I think my evaporator may have bit the dust! What is the going rate for that type of repair At a non dealer shop? Particularly in the South East (North Carolina?.

I know it is a large job and you have to comfortable around Air Bags and not screwing up the interior. I think this one is just a bit to much for my skill level.

Regards,

Woody.

As usual TIA

I had a good independant shop in California do the evaporator, receiver/dryer and oraface tube last year. It ran just under $1,300. Works great and no dash rattles in the 1993 850. It was worth it as these cars last and are fun to drive. There is a DYI link out there, with photos, if you can stomache the job. It is not something I wanted to do.

It all depends on the labor charge in your area. My dealer is at $125-130/hour, indies are at $100-110.

The book rate says 10 hours to R&R the evaporator. Plus a new evap, seals, dryer/accumulator, and a few assorted goodies.

Yes, it is a daunting job. So find an indie that has done it before. You don't want to be the 1st in a shop.

      Cost of AC repair/Euro lenses. S70 1998

Hi Klaus, Woody here. Thought you might be interested. Had the S70 Inspected. Not a Word said about lenses. Don't think there must be much emphasis on that area here.

      TIA,

      Woody

        Klaus,
I was so impressed at how the patched lense worked I pulled off the tape and ordered the other lense from FCP Groton, folllowed your instructions about alignment. That means I have a pair of us lenses at loose ends and 1 euro lense patched at loose ends. any of these can be had for postage if you can use them. The shipping is steep however.

To be fair about this I bought a few tools From IPD today too. I think the shipping was as much as the stuff. But Hey truckers got to eat and fix their trucks

        Regards to all Woody.

When I picked my 1998 R the first week of August, the AC charge swa real low and cycled all of the time. I know it is leaking, it did that for 5 years before I sold it. I put a 28 oz can in it, Target special, and it is still cold. The pressure at rest, overnight, was 65psi yesterday.

I would try a small can of leak stop, sold at NAPA, followed by a large can of R134a. At least that is the strategy I am going to try when the pressure gets too low again. $30 Vs $2500 is a no brainer, even if it doesn't last for 5 years.

Keep the cabin filter clean, they are cheap.

I have yet to see an inspection place fail someone for having non-DOT lenses on a car. They only care that the lights work. The right beam might be messed up because of that glass that got knocked out from the stone hit. I filled it in with clear paint to the best of my ability, which was probably not good enough. If you take the black tape off the driver's side, you will get a lot more light on the right side of the road.

        Have fun,

        Klaus
