Drive Axle Replacement 850

I just spent the day (yes, I am slow) replacing the drive axles on our 850. The boots on both sides were bad. There is some good instructions on this site but I wanted to add my experience to help the next guy.

Lesson 1
Most instructions say break the joint at the lower ball joint, DON'T. Break the two bolts that connect the A frame to the main frame. This frees the strut so it can swing away and allow room to pull the axle. I did one side each way. Braking the two bolts at the frame is the way to go.

Lesson 2
When pulling the axle on the drivers side it does not break away from transmission easily like the passenger side. To free it get under the car and drive a big flat screw driver between the axle and the transmission. It came easily but only after I got underneath and went straight up.

Overall the job was not as bad as I imagined it would be.

    Drive Axle Replacement 850

Update: Three years later the Chinese Reman axles both failed at the out boots and I am almost certain they caused the steering to wobble at the steering wheel about a year after I installed them. The wobble would come and go. The boots were trashed so I suspect them have been bad for a while the grease was gone and the joints were dry.

I bought them at NAPA and they replaced them for free. Not a very good deal. If I had it to over again I would have taken my oem axles to a local shop that replaces boots.

Maybe the new junk ones will last another three years. I am getting pretty good at replacing them.

    Hawk
