no reverse on my 850 wagon! 850

my 850 wagon has 210k miles and has been 'slipping' in reverse for a week or two. now.... i have no reverse, it just winds up with no force/fluid at all. all the forward gears are still working normally. my local independant mechanic will put a used unit on for $1200 with a one year warranty.

whaddya think?...
is it worth it?

the car is in pretty good/clean shape otherwise...
and i cant replace it with anything of equal utility/appeal for $1200.

ugh!

Always get a second opinion, it's usually free. And check for codes in the A-1 box.

got a second, third and fourth opinion. all were more expensive and after discussions with an uncle and mechanic pal (who cant fix it any cheaper than the local indy shop) my disc pack is burnt up/fused.
anyhow, im gonna go forward and get 'er fixed. my local volvo indy shop has a 112k tranny from a car he worked on for most of its life.

so... here i go spending money i aint made yet...
        wish me luck!

Doing a tranny drop at a P&P is not an easy task, but a great learning experience. Worth the $130 even if the tranny is toast - who knows why the car is there anyway?

Make sure you replace the rear main seal on the engine while things are apart.

Good luck, may she go another 160k (at least).

If you haven't brought her in, and you (and your uncle) are feeling frisky, why not try to replace it yourself? It is a big job, don't get me wrong, but you'll save 1000 or so.

Read this PDF and see what you think: http://rapidshare.com/files/422334927/replacing_transmission.pdf

Yep its a big job, but doable.

If you're game, I'd recommend you head to VA beach Pick'n'Pull. It looks like they have a few 850's on the lot, and they'll lend you the hoist. I'd plan on spending the whole day there getting the engine out and the transmission off. It looks like the transmission will cost ya about $100 plus 30 for core (I doubt you'll be returning it since its a hike back, but who knows). Taking it outta a car will also be a nice learning experience on what you'll have to do when, or if, you do yours. The nice thing about junkyard cars, is that if you damage something else it doesn't really matter (except to the guy who comes looking for that part later, but the PnP's usually crush the cars within a month or two so..) and if the job appears to be out of your capability, you've just wasted some time and gas money..

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?

You live in the town I left a few weeks ago. There is an independent Volvo shop that I used but was less than satisfied with. I had to keep returning for repairs not done correctly that were not that difficult but my job there didn't allow me time to take care of myself. Seat back cable, speedo gears, motor mounts and constant CELs for vacuum leaks. The vacuum leaks were an easy fix but missed twice by them.

I would be looking for another shop for a trans replacement. PM me for details.

I am also surprised that there are no codes in A-1.

$1200 is a fair price in your area, but your car is dated a little and worth less than $1200. Check craigslist for comparisons and S70s.

No codes, no limp mode? That sucks

The reverse lights are on so the car realizes it should be in reverse correct?

Assuming you've lost the gear (which is actually pretty hard to lose it and nothing else) go to a transmission shop and see what they can do. They know the trannys and usually can rebuild a bit cheaper.

Do you KNOW that the car is working in all four gears? You can verify them with the gear selection knob while driving (put the car in L from 0-9mph will go to first; go into L from above 20mph and it will be in 2nd, upshift to 3 and it should upshift when you let off the throttle.. Speed up and throw it into drive and it should upshift again... If you can't get into 1st or 4th you might have lost Brake 3 or Clutch 2 (respectively..)
