Hello All,

I have a '96 850 GLT wagon with a 5 speed manual that has 215,000 miles on the odometer. About a month ago while driving on the highway for half an hour or longer, the ABS and TRACS lights came on. When I stopped the car and started the engine, both light went off. It seemed these lights will only come on if I am doing long distance driving on the highway. They never come on in local stop and go driving.

The ABS unit probably has been replaced on this car (I purchased it used in 1999) but I can't say for sure. I have 3 Volvo wagons and it is hard to keep them separate in my mind.

Recently, I brought the car in for service at my independent garage. I asked the mechanic to check and clean the ABS sensors. He did and returned the car. A few days later while driving on the highway, the ABS and TRACS lights came on again. I brought the car back again to my independent garage. Both lights were out when I brought the car in. The mechanic attached a scanner to see if there was recorded error code, but OBI II came back with no codes which he said would be evidence the problem lay with the ABS unit.

Neither light has come on again the last few weeks, but I'm still puzzled as to what was triggering them. I don't want to have ABS unit repaired needlessly. Any thoughts or suggestions?
