power steering supply and return lines 850 1993

Hi All,

I've developed a leak in the metal line from the power steering pump to the rack.
It is rusting through. I love Vermont!

How much trouble is it to un-thread the fittings from the rack? I've had success with brake lines by cutting the line off just above the "flare nut" and putting a tight fitting 6 point deep socket on it. Tight fitting to the point of using SAE socket that's a bit smaller and tapping it on with a hammer.

Replacements are available, FCPgroton wants $69 for pressure side and $93.50 for return. The cheapskate in me wants to take a shot cutting the old line up close to the rubber end of the line where the line is still in good shape and using a flaring tool and a union to "patch" it. The question is what kind of flare is in the line where it attaches to the rack ?
Is it a single flare, double flare (Brake line style) or is it a balloon flare like Volvo uses on all of their brake lines?

Has anyone else had any success with that ?

Thanks in advance,
John

I am having the exact same problem, and have exactly the same questions.

I started a thread about this not long ago:
    http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1416344/V70/custom_power_steering_lines.html

As for the 'patching' union you should be able to use any kind of flare you like - I use the more old-school double flare because it's easy to make and easy to find tools and fittings.

Now as to the fitting on the end that fits into the rack...

I /think/ I have determined they are a GM fuel line fitting. There doesn't seem to be a more technical name than that... Here's a good pic of one:
    http://www.ntxtools.com/network-tool-warehouse/MTC-71400.html

Papco sells these fittings pre-made. See their catalog here:
    http://www.hpaulin.com/Catalogue/Steel_Brake_Lines_2006.pdf
    page 9, items 905-350 and 905-352

I don't know if 14mm or 16mm is big enough for the rack fittings or not, but I'm pretty sure these are the fittings.

I would love to check but it would mean disabling the car until I got the lines back together.

I half thought about ordering the lines from a local supplier like NAPA and comparing the fittings so I could 'patch' my lines cheaply as you suggested, and then returning the new lines...

THANK YOU for the detail that you've already provided!
Please do not go out and take your car apart just to measure/determine the size of the lines!

Unless the "pieces / parts" individual repair fittings are inexpensive it defeats the cheapskate purpose.

I will have to "do the math".
      Thanks again.
      John

        Joel,
Here is what I have found for parts. They are manufactured by Dorman.
The local Advance Auto in New Jersey carries two of them.
800-151 is an 18 inch 5/16 diameter "pigtail" with a 14mm flare nut, an O-ring, and Brass compression fitting for $16.29 in New Jersey.
800-233 is same price. It is a short "pigtail" about 6 inches with a 14mm flare nut with a 90 degree bend.
the first 4 advance carries on line

        they do NOT carry these

        800-170 is only $5.29
        800-240 is only $3.97
unfortunately the do not have a 5/16 versions for same price.

ok so it looks like you've confirmed that it is the 'GM Fuel Line' fitting. That's excellent. Strangely enough it seems I have more questions now though.

How did you determine that these fittings are the same as the fittings on the end of the power steering line? Did you have a power steering line off to compare? Did you compare with a new one at the auto parts store?

You list a number of sizes of line/fittings - do you know which sizes are correspond to which line in our PS system?

            Joel,

This may be a comedy of errors.
I did all of my research based on your description of the flare.
You described the 14mm and 16mm metric flare nuts in detail. ;o)
I'm sorry I thought that you said that you had already disassembled the fittings and looked at them !

I have not yet taken my lines apart.

The lines on my car are very rusty. I don't want to "Go after" them until I'm more sure of what's going on.

My guess is that the smaller 5/16 line is the pressure side
and the 3/8 is the return. Again I've not crawled under the car to check.

            Sorry for the confusion.
            John

ok jollyjohn I think I see what's happened here. Oh well.

So we know where to buy these fittings and who makes them but we're neither of us sure if they are actually the correct fittings or not.

I did take a cursory look at those fittings the last time I was under the car and I came away with two thoughts -
1 - both look to be the same size
2 - the lines look bigger than 5/16 or 3/8. I would have to bring the calipers down to check for sure.

Anyway, as I mentioned in my first post I think the best bet would be to find a cooperative parts dealer, and order the new lines in with the express intent of merely measuring the fittings and then return the line for a full refund. This would allow one to search for a replacement fitting with the real one in-hand for comparison. Then once the 'new' comparison lines are returned for a full refund, you could start tearing into your PS system feeling reasonably confident that you've got a handle on the correct replacement fittings, and set to work patching your old lines.

If I go into town today I know of a parts place that might be willing to cooperate with me on this.

                Joel,

Again sorry about the confusion. Good luck with the parts supplier.

This not my primary car. In fact I bought it "on speculation" at an auction. My failure however, is "catastrophic". It is spraying fluid and the reservoir emptied it self in a matter of minutes.

I have another worry, and that is whether or not I'll be able to loosen the flare nuts from the rack or not. There is not a lot of room "up there" to play around with the fittings. And no I have not yet taken any actual measurements of the lines. I was going to, until we encouraged each other with all that data ;o)

My local independent guys tell me that they have had to replace entire racks because the Vermont corrosion made the fitting impossible to remove.

Solidarity in diagnosis and repair !!

                Thanks again, John
