1998 XC70 Tranny Flush V70-XC70

What's the concensus on the best ATF to use? Any advantage to using synthetic?

I love running the Mobil fluid in mine =).

It's expensive, but it cured a flaky solenoid or something askew in my transmission for now, and its run great for the past 2 years I've used it.

    I really like this one.

    http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_Multi-Vehicle_ATF.aspx

    - correct spec +
    - compatible with any conventional ATF
    - Synthetic blend (much better than conventional ATF)
    - great price (compared to /fully/ synthetic)
    - widely available

basically you get most of the benefits of a fully synthetic oil but at near the cost of conventional oil. All in a package that's widely available (they sell it at Canadian Tire anyway) and compatible with pretty much any oil you'd buy at the gas station/WalMart/etc.

I have also been using a bottle of this Lucas transmission product which I think is great stuff :

My flush routine looks like this lately:

    - flush 4.x liter jug of cheaper conventional ATF DEX III
    - flush 4.x liter jug of Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF discussed above
    - add full bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix discussed above
    - top up with 1 liter bottle of Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF discussed above or the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF

Also, BTW I see on the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF page that this fluid is rated for both Toyota T-III and Toyota T-IV specs.

Maybe this means it would work for either the older 4 sp trans and the newer 5 sp trans that requires 3309 fluid? I think it does.

Mobil 1 ATF appears to be very good. I use DEX/Merc only because I am cheap and not hard on the transmission, and I flush every 50K (which is pretty soon now).
