To Fix or not to Fix V70-XC70 2001

Opinions needed! We have a 2001 V70 T5 with approximately 284,00kms. We love the car and it fits us great! Body is in great shape, tires are new and runs pretty good too! It has been looked after and oil changes every 5000kms.But the time has come when we either have to fix a few things or find something else.
Things that need replacing, Brake Booster, Drive shafts, shocks and rear view mirror(which will stay awhile as the part and Volvo programming will be close to $1000)the only bad side effect of the rear view mirror is that it's taken out the power roof. Anyways my question is Fix or sell?
If I do go ahead with fixing any thoughts or knowledge on using Volvo or 3rd party replacement shafts and Brake Booster?

    I was looking at my 1998 and also couldn't see the valve. Please get a second opinion for the brakes. When the booster goes out, the brake pedal will become hard as a rock. If it is the ABS module, they are easily repaired.

    I am positive that you can find a new mirror in the correct color at a local salvage yard. The electrical connector for the whole mirror is in the door panel. If you get one from a 2001-2003 with the auto dimming feature, I doubt it needs to be reprogrammed. You might want to post here and ask for help for that particular item. Erie volvo should have one.

    Axles are easy to replace, figure $100 + $100 labor for each at a reputable garage.

      Brakes seem to work fine except for the almost constant hiss from the suspected brake booster, two other points about this if the car is idling the idle will go up if the brake is not depressed and going up hills the hiss will go away. The axles I see IPD sells for $100.00 but a couple of the volvo shops up here say they're not good and want to sell you the genuine Volvo shafts. I see IPD is using another provider "EMPI" anyone ever had any issues with the drive shafts purchased form IPD?

        Your brake booster works with engine vacuum. I suspect the valve is broken, but a rubber boot inside the booster may also be cracked, allowing air to escape. This will affect your engine because of the loss of vacuum, the engine management uses vacuum to control engine speed and fuel consumption.

        Of course, there are many shops that use OEM axles rather than EMPI. OEM will never leak or slip, some of the off brand will and techs hate to see a car come back in because the axle is .01mm too small. Just tell them you have a lot of miles on the car and buying OEM makes no monetary sense.
        Replacing axles is not rocket science, which is why so many here DIY. A regular mechanic could do the same job, just check his name tag for certification so you know he is good.

    Save money V70-XC70 2001

    Just an after thought. So long as you like the car and it is not costing too much for you to maintain, start a separate savings account for a new car. Just put $200-300 each month into an account or mattress, so that in 2 years you will have a good down payment.

    I never buy a car with monthly payments, if I cannot afford it then it is not for me. Besides, I would rather buy a good used car than a brand new piece of junk.

    I agree with everyone else. Fix it. All issues are pretty much maint. issues and once addressed, you can have many more years of service with no payments.

    I just needlessly bought a 1998 V70R because it was priced cheap. It needs new rear brakes, parking brake cables, a Nivomat probably bit the dust, the AC will not fully charge, and it has 300,000 Km on the odometer. A fine car.

    Your car has known issues, a 'new' used car also will have issues but they will be unknown.

    There are a couple of very good independent shops in the Toronto area that will treat your car with care. A used part to fix the mirror is your best bet, or seek out Xemodex.com , a Canadian outfit that is more reasonable than the dealer.

    The other wear and tear items - get new shocks/struts/seats because you wore them out. Even if you sell the car, the new owner will ding you for needing to replace them. Brake booster? Are you sure it is the booster and not the oneway valve on the vacuum line?

    Speaking of vacuum lines, they all need to be replaced. Age will crack them and leaks will set off the check engine light or Lambda light.

    Fix your comfortable car.

      Thanks for the advice and to all others! Anyways acouple of questions about your advice the valve that you talk about were would I find that? and when it comes to replacing the vacuum lines I noticed that IPD is selling silicon tubing, is there any advantage to using it instead of the traditional rubber? I had checked around for a used mirror and only been able to find them at wreckers in Texas and another state down south. My concern is that by the appearance of ours the ECU has probably overheated and fried and this is what caused the mirror to go foggy. Like I said before the mirror isn't a priorty but something that will be fixed in time.

        silicone is much better than rubber. Way better heat resistance, chemical resistance, and durability. Not to mention the fancy colours :) It's also much more expensive than bulk rubber vac line.

    Hello, You asked for opinions. Mine is to fix your car. The booster, shafts and shocks are no big deal. The brake booster and shafts will likely be rebuilds and not cost that much. A site sponsor (FCPGroton-which is having an August promotion, Eeuroparts etc.) will stand behind the fit of parts. Also I've read posts about swapping the circuit board from your mirror to a junkyard mirror, thus avoiding a trip to the dealer. The posts involved replacing the failed glass portion of a self dimming mirror. Is that your problem? Kira
