P0301 misfire # 1 cylinder. S70

I could use some help with this issue. I have changed plugs, replaced the ignition coil and still get the misfire code. If I move the new coil to another cylinder the code changes to that cylinder as well and clears on #1. I thought it might be the aftermarket coils so I went and picked one up at the Volvo parts department and still the same issue. Any Ideas ?

Is the new coil sitting on the plug correctly. When you first moved the coil from #1 to #2 and the code followed, you correctly assumed a bad coil - we all did. An aftermarket coil not working is not unheard of.

But are you sure you got the correct OEM coil? and plugged it in correctly? Strange!!!

Took the old one to the dealer, parts store, and the replacement was the same part number at both places. I even swaped the boot with the old boot to see if it would seat better. But still getting the misfire. Coil fits in place well and I put the silicone lube on it to make sure it slid on easier. I hate to have to take it to the dealer if there is something I can fix. I changed the engine last year so that is why I took the old coil to make sure I was getting the correct one. The parts guy said the engine is the same in the C-70 and the S-70. Engine # is the same. I am at a loss. I did have a P0442 code befor but that should have been fixed when I changed the J hose on the canister. Plus the misfire would not follow the new coil when moved to another cylinder.

"the misfire would not follow the new coil when moved to another cylinder. "

You are confusing me with the coils. Have you tried swapping the plugs from #1 to another cylinder? Is the #1 plug wet/dirty indicating no spark?

Before you bring it somewhere, check the compression - again.

I do not want to confuse you as much as I am.
Here are the things I have done and the continuing problem. I get a P0301 code, changed the plugs with NGK G-Power Platinum plugs, Still had P0301 code. Bought new coil and replace the #1 cylinder coil, still had P0301 code. Then I saw the
post from someone that they moved the coil to another cylinder to verify the
coil was the problem. I moved the #1 cylinder coil to # 5 cylinder and #5 coil
to #1 cylinder. Ran the car and now have P0305 code. I took the coil back and
they verified it was the correct coil for my engine, gave me another coil and
it misfires as well. The engine does not run as rough as it did before
but still runs rough and still have the P0305 code. Moved the new coil back to
#1 cylinder and now have the P0301 code. I am very frustrated and think it
might be that I need to change all the coils. Is it possible that the replacement coils fire different so the computer reads them as misfiring? I am at a loss for a solution. I have always had at least one Volvo and love the car. I guess I may have to take this to a dealer to get it fixed this time.

            Clueless S70

You did all of the correct things to check the misfire. The new coil should have fixed your problem after you replaced it in #5 position.

I am wondering if it could have been seated incorrectly and not grounding.

That is strange. What brand of plugs are you using? You might also want to try looking at the coil packs at night to see if you see any arcing. The P0442 would have nothing to do with misfires.

NGK Platinum. All the other cylinders are firing fine with them. But the new coil is causing a misfire in any cylinder I move it to. I have tried 3 new coils and they all have done the same thing. I am really frustrated at this point and almost to the point of taking the car to a dealer to have it fixed. I love this 2000 S-70 and have never had a problem like this before.

Finally fixed the problem. After many different possible solutions I finally broke down and replaced all the coils. Low and behold that took care of the issue. Back up and running like a champ at 215,000 miles. I would like to thank all for your help.
