Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

How does one disengage the Electronic Speed Limiter on the T-5, and does the disengagement void the warrenty?

Does anyone know the top speed of the T-5 w/o the speed limiter engaged?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Tim

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 99

Tim,

The S70 T5 Police Package went 153 mph at the Michigan State Police

2000 Model Year Police Vehicle Tests. The V70 went 152. Per the test

vehicle descriptions, neither were "R" versions (mine is but I

have never tried much over 100...)

Unfortunately, Volvo did not participate in the 2001 MSP tests - maybe

because of Ford, maybe because the S60 wasn't ready. We'll have to

wait and see next year.

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

The IPD ECU upgrade removes the top speed limiter. Basically,

you have to reprogram the ECU to do it. A 98 T5 is "limited" to

143MPH. Later years reduced that number a bit (120 MPH, I believe).

I have seen an image posted here of a turbo model's speedo

pegged at 140 showing about 5500 RPM. Without a limiter

I doubt it would go much faster since power starts to drop off

around 5600 RPM.

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

Ray,

I believe that the limiter on 1999 (and later) TURBO models is 130mph and on the non-turbo models is 120mph.

I have had my cars once to a tad over 140 mph, I was told that for 1998 all turbo models were limited to 145mph.

A Volvo Retailer will not (and most will not go into the troublemin finding out how) remove the governor. It can be done, though.

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter V70-XC70 97

My V70 AWD has topspeed of 235 km/h with winter tires and needs 22 liters of petrol (99 octan, sulfur free) --> best performance on german highways, where they have no speed limit.

Iīm living in Austria, we have a lot of snow in the mountains and this car is like an animal, if you go to the limits of traction !

On the Highway, the AWD is a Mercedes, Audi and BMW Killer, because of better traction in curves.

Donīt even care abount curves, even at 230 km/h, the AWD corrects nearly everything.

In the mountains when streets are dry it kills nearly everything, even Porsches !

Itīs a perfect car.

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

The calculated max speed on a 98 S70 T5M is only 150MPH @ 5700RPM.

So 145 MPH is basiclly no electronic limit at all. At that kind of speed you will never notice 5MPH.

This means that Volvo engineers did an excelent job of matching power, drive train, and aerodynamics to achieve max speed & max hp output at the same time.

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

............to top it all off, there's no place in the US where anyone can legally go that that speed other than a race track and no S70 can get close to that speed in the 1/4 mile either, so there's no real point in trying is there?

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter V70-XC70 2001

John -

There's ALWAYS a point in trying :-) My response to this argument is to ask how happy you'd be if we electronically limited the top speed of your car to the top posted speed in your state. It isn't legal to go above, so what's the point in having it available?

Just trying to play the devil's advocate here, so please don't take it as a personal attack. I haven't gone faster than 120 myself, though I have banged against the RPM limiter.

John,

You can legally & safely satisfy your top speed urge at least 3 times a year in the US. It's well organized and called Open Road Racing. Check out their website at http://www.openroadracing.com/

Hmmm, does look like fun. Too bad I'm no where near Nevada.

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

I live out West myself, and there are plenty of highways where one can safetly test the top end of a vehicle (albeit not legally). Spots on I-80 through Wyoming come to mind as well as I-70 between Denver and Vegas.

Keep an eye out for Smokey!

BTW what does the M at the end of T5M stand for? Was it an option package or are all 98 S70s T5s Ms?

Re: Electronic Speed Limiter S70 98

"M" means manual transmission. (Sometimes you see "A" for

automatic, too.)

I suppose we may soon need "A5" for the 5 speed autos and

"G" for geartronic.
