dashboard removal 850

I am trying to get my dashboard off but cant seem to find all of the fasteners. The top part of the dash was no problem but how do I remove the middle and lower parts near the center console?

Thanks, Nick

Are you trying to replace the evaporator or just stop the dash from rattling? Volvospeed has some good pics depending on the work you want to do:

      Thanks for the reply.

I am actually trying to take the dash out to change the colour from faded black to purple, to match the exterior of the car. I have the apillers and all the other trim parts out as well as the top part of the dash. They are prepped for the colour change but I don't want to start until I am sure that I can get the rest of the dash out. I don't want the dash to be two different colours.

All I can seem to find is how to get the dash cover out which I have already done. Is the wood grain part of the dash and the black part one piece or do they come apart from each other?

      Thank you for your input
      Nick

PS. If you are wondering why I did the car purple, this is the story. I always told my wife that my dream car was a 850 t5r. She said if I found one for sale, I could buy it, thinking it would never happen due to car being somewhat rare. Well one day I found a badly faded cream yellow one for sale a couple hours from my place and bought it. When I brought it home my wife was mad that I bought it and even more mad that it was "ugly yellow" as she referred to it.
She sarcasticlly said that she would rather drive a car that was bright purple than the crappy yellow volvo that I brought home without getting her "consent". She wanted a Honda Civic.

After being offended by her insulting one of the gretest cars ever made- our wonderful Volvo, I went out and painted the car bright purple like Barney the singing dinosaur.
Needless to say, the wife was angry about it for almost a year. But after she drove it a few times and experienced the power the t5r has, she fell in love with the car too. The car does look rediculous but I would rather push it down the street than drive a Honda.
      Thanks again.

Start reading on page 7 or 8:

        http://www.woodjoiner.com/volvo/VolvoEvapReplace.pdf

The dash retaining clips should also be reinforced before putting the dash back in.

The 'wood' and plastic pieces all come out. Easiest if pushed from behind.

        A purple T5R????

        LOL

Thanks so much for the link. It is very useful and will be a great help.

I'm glad you got a laugh from the thought of a purple T5-R but I am sure you are NOT picturing how rediculous it looks. I will have to post some pics when I am done this project. I am sure you will have many more laughs.

Thanks again for all your help.

            NQB,

Having done this job I offer the following advice.

There are actually 6 torx screws holding the lower dash--2 at each end, 2 on either side of the shifter and 2 behind the ashtray.

The screws that hold the center panel do not have to be removed. But, have someone help you remove the dash. It is heavy and any flexing will break the fragile tabs the screws secure. To remove the dash, you lift up to clear the locating pegs and then pull away.

To reinstall, lift over the ledge to allow room for the locating pegs to seat.

Do NOT tighten the bolts over 5-6 ft lbs!

I found that placing a faucet washer (same OD as the washer) between the metal washer of the bolt and the firewall absorbs vibration and allows some movement of the dash to further reduce noise if it is warped from years of sun exposure.

Le me know if you have any questions.

            Good luck,
            Bryan

              Bryan,

Thanks for the reply. I am giving my car an interior makeover and the lower dash was the only area that I was having trouble with. I'm hoping to tackle this job on the long weekend coming up.

              Nick

After taking 3 good pics, left front, right rear, and dash, resize them to 30-50MB and put them on the Gallery. We cannot wait to see them.
