The 93's are known for tranny troubles (ask me how I know this :)
Is the upshift light or economy/sport light near the shifter blinking? That indicates its in limp home mode. Try not to drive until you diagnose the problem. It might not be the tranny. Do a search on PNP switch. There is also info on the PNP at volvospeed.com in the repair section.
You did say the fluid is good and not burnt? If so, you might want to try the following.
A Volvo dealer told me to floor it in reverse and slam on the brakes. Repeat, repeat and repeat some more. This supposedly can fix it if the tranny is not too far gone. My very limited understanding of this problem is that the case is bad on the 93 trannies. As the tranny heats up the slipping starts. You might be in luck if your son's car is worse when cold. Normally it is the opposite with 93's. Like my 93....
Hope you have better luck with it than I did.
95-97 850's and 98 V70's are better choices. I bought my 93 very cheap and got 20k out of it so the hit wasn't too bad. Instead I ended up with a pristine 95 wagon that drives like new - it all worked out for the best!!
