Winter tires V70-XC70 2001

Anybody has a suggestion about winter tires for the T5? I would love to get winter tires that fit the 17" rims...does anyone have any idea how they would perform in the snow (drive from Boston to Montreal thru vermont often...)?

Welcome any suggestions

Nokian makes the Q, studless tire, in the exact same size as the new XC uses: P215/65HR16

I got 4 with steel rims, assembled and balanced, for $638 including tax, from Town Fair Tire in Northampton MA.

These got the best reviews, especially for lateral grip, which I think counts for more than accel/decel. I'll be changing with the normal tires frequently to save them from burning out. Only takes about 30min to change the set, which is a big plus for extra rims.

I'd also suggest you read your owner's manual... V70-XC70 2001

...for the recommended size. In a snow tire you want taller and narrower. In a performance tire you want wider and shorter, which will "float" on snow.

On my '98 T5, I run a set of 4 Dutch Vredestein studded winter tires on steel wheels during nasty months, and save my $$$ alloy wheels and Z-rated tires for the rest of the year.

With 17" wheels (225/50/17 tires?) you may want to purchase steel winter wheels to both preserve the expensive performance wheels and to give a better choice of snow tires. There's a few studless 17 inch snow tires (such as Bridgestone, Nokian & Pirelli) that would fit but many more 16 inch studded and studless. Look in your manual for recommended winter tire size. I'd guess 215/55/16.

I'm interested also. Check out www.tirerack.com; there seem to be a number of options. I'm still thinking, but the snow will be flying soon in Chicago.

I did check tirerack and I like what I see. I just want to make sure that 235 tires won't make me slide like crazy. Let me know what you decide, I need to make a decision soon.

Does anyone know if the bolt pattern on the 2001 T-5 is the same as the 2000? Also, I used to put the 15-inch Gislaved snows with steel rims on my 98 R. Will these tires work on the 2001 T-5?

Nope. Won't clear the brakes. Got to go 16 or higher.

Have Michelen Artic Alpines on the 97 GLT. Seem to work wonders on I 70 from Denver to ski country. Not lots of road noise, not bad for dry pavement wear either. I think you might have problems finding 17" winter tires. When I got mine, I bought a set of tires mounted on steel wheel and a set of hub caps. The price was right, now if I hit a pot hole I dont cringe as much.
