Advice for buying an 850R 850 1997

I'm new to Brickboard and Volvos as a whole, but joined the forum due to my increasing interest in the possible purchase of a 1997 850R Wagon w/ 170k miles. All I can currently tell you about the car is that it's in good condition externally, but I'll get a chance to give it a closer inspection in a few days. I know it gets old when newbies show up and start asking questions that have been answered dozens of times, but I've searched around, found some good information, and just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I know what basic automotive things to look for when purchasing used cars, but I would be very interested in learning what to look for from a Volvo standpoint, as well as specifics for a '97 850R Wagon.

To better inform you of how the car will be used, I don't necessarily plan for it to be my daily driver. This would be a 'road trip' car. My wife and I make a monthly weekend trip to visit our families that's around 700 miles total, and due to the need for more room I'm looking for a reliable vehicle to carry that load. So, I would also be interested in your opinions on whether this would be a good decision for the task at hand.

Thanks.

Thank you all for the feedback. I'll be sure to keep everything in mind (and in my notebook) when inspecting the car. I'll post again next week after I see the car and I've got more specifics on the things you pointed out and others things I notice. If you think of anything else, or if there's anyone else out there who has feedback it's all appreciated!

A fine car, especially at highway speeds. You will get 27-29mpg on the highway.

The "R" has sport suspension, which lowers the car by 2 inches. It also makes for rough riding around town, even the tar strips are noticable (my wife said the shadows from telephone poles were also).

The front struts are probably original and will need to be replaced, no big deal. The rear shocks are Nivomats, self leveling and very expensive to replace. Of course, the older the shocks/struts the more you feel the pavement.

The Volvo seats are some of the best in the world, you will not feel tired after a 350 mile nonstop drive.

The wagon version will need new tailgate struts, very easy to replace and cheap.

This car is getting to the point where it will need some somewhat costly repairs. Check if the timing belt was replaced at around 140 K miles. If not its overdue and the rollers and water pump should be replaced also. Front suspension bushings/struts/etc. probably need replacement. Last tunup? Plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires?? Has the radiator been replaced? It won't last much longer. Check the tranny fluid closely. Is it at the correct level and fresh looking or does it indicate any burning condition? They're pretty good cars when maintained properly but money pits more than most when they're neglected.

Welcome. There are TONS of very informed people that will help you here.

Im not sure an R will be the best car for you needs IMO. Are the areas you'll be visiting mountainous? If they are, you'll appreciate the turbo. If not, I'd look for a naturally aspirated. You'll get better fuel economy but you'll have like half of the get up and go with it.

I have a 98 s70 5 speed NA. I love it to death. 30 MPG, and enough power for me to do what I need to do.

As far as inspections, check the AC as the evaporators tend to leak all of the freon out. Very expensive or time consuming to fix.

Check the timing belt. It should have been changed twice now, and is due for another change along with the tensioners.

The rear tailgate will most likely rattle. It can be fixed, but if you slam the gate it will only break again.

The front strut mounts/spring seats tend to go bad on these, they make lots of noise, but no adverse mechanical or handling effects.

Check to see that the ABS works, the units go bad. There is a fella who fixes them for ~$120 bucks lifetime warranty.

other than that, try to get the radio code, youll need it if the battery is disconnected.

Best luck. R's are a blast to drive. Never driven a wagon though!

    Jello
