Timing Belt Indexing S80 2001

Nothing is ever simple. I was putting the flange back on the harmonic balancer after taking it off to help look for my coolant leak. I felt the cog belt slip twice while I was turning the engine with a pull handle. I think it may have slipped on the water pump, but I do not know. The belt was riding up on it when I looked. How do I check to make sure the cams are still in time before I restart the engine?

    Timing Belt Indexing S80 2001

I got a real Volvo mechanic to make a house call to my shop. The timing had not slipped. The finishing up of the job was not without trouble, but the car is running again.

Make sure the spark plugs are out of the engine so it is easy to turn. Then rotate the engine until the marks are lined up.

If you are way off, do not force the crank past any "hard" spots. In that case, you will have to remove the belt, position the cams, and turn the crank to its TDC mark before re-installing the belt.

If you can easily turn the crank 720 degrees, then check the timing marks. They must be spot on.
