Does S60 Turbo Need Warm-Up/Cool Down Idle S60

Hey, all,

Just picked up a sweet 2006 S60 2.5T. It's my wife's car and the newest car I've ever owned. My experience is with older turbos where it's necessary to warm up the turbo by idling for 30 secs. to 1 minute to let the oil build in the turbo unit and after driving, idling for the same amount of time to prevent the oil coking in the turbo.

I know that many turbo units are now water cooled and have a timed device to prevent this problem. Is my '06 S60 one of them? Do I still need to keep up my old turbo care or do I just look like an idiot doing unnecessary work? I also REALLY don't want to counsel her on idling if I'm wrong. I'd NEVER hear the end of that!

Thanks in advance, guys.

Check your oweners manual. Mine ('06 S60 tubro) says do an idle cool down. Doesn't matter if turbo or not, let it warm up prior to driving in a spirited manner.

Depends on your maintenance, and whether you use synthetic oil ... S60

If you change your oil often, and/or use synthetic oil, you shouldn't have any concerns. Modern synthetics stand up to heat, and protect bearings' surfaces, far better than conventional ("dino") oils.

Turbos have gotten better these days. I never give it full gas until the engine has warmed up a bit, about 1 mile. And I never race the engine within 1 mile of home, allowing the turbo to cool off while still driving.

Don't bother to tell your wife about the cool down period, unless she is a closet Parnelli Jones :)

Thanks, for the response, Klaus. That's a big relief! I want this gem to really run and want to do everything right. All of my Volvos have ('66 122, '78 244, '79 245) been purchased with 100K+ miles so I never had the opportunity to do it right so early in the car's life. Excited at my first chance.

      Thanks again and happy driving.

Hope my wife doesn`t read this. S60

        Klaus,
You mean that all efforts to get my wife to "turbo up/turbo down" has been kinda` wasted?
The XC runs synthetic but I guess I`ll continue to re-inforce turbo protocol anyway.
        Rich
