Power seat problem 850 1995

My 95 850 Turbo Wagon has a power seat on driver's side only. The forward/backward control works fine, but the seat back control doesn't.

When you activate the seat back control, you can hear the motor running, but there is no movement. Looking under the seat, I can see nothing out of the ordinary.

This is a car I recently purchased, with 95K miles on it. The car was not driven in winters (until now!), and had been driven very little in the past few years. In general, the interior parts show very little wear.

Fortunately, the seat back is in a position I can live with. However, it'd be nice to be able to adjust it from time to time.

I realize this problem may require getting at parts buried within the seat, so the other thing I'm wondering about is how to remove the leather seat cover.

Thanks,

mick

Common problem. The cable gets loose and no longer turns the sprocket. There are 3 or 4 hog rings at the bottom of the seat back, cut them and pull them off. You can use plastic zip ties to put the seat back together, they last forever.

The cover for the side of the seat comes off by pulling up on the front and then pulling it forward?

You can cut 1/4 inch off the cable sheathing and reinserting it back in the motor and other end, depending which end has the slipping problem.

On my 1995, I just cut the hog clips, and reached in to find the cable and pushed it back down on both sides, worked for 2 years more until I sold it.

The cable most probably needs to be replaced. See this site: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/seatcable1.htm

So as not to stress my seat cables I adjust the seat, using my assigned memory button, prior to sitting in it. There's 3 of us who use the 850. Fortunately there's 3 memory buttons too.

Good luck,
Dukester

Thanks for the tips guys.

In my cyber-travels while trying to solve this problem, I also found this:

http://www.volvo-forums.com/t18304-850-seat-back-cable-repair.htm

which has somewhat clearer pictures than the volvospeed version.

I am a bit leery of cutting the hog rings on my nice unspoiled leather seat, but sounds like there's no choice.

If it stays warm and doesn't rain this weekend, I'll get at it.

Thanks again.
