Engine stalling S80 2000

2000 S80 T6. Over the past month the car has stalled 50-60 times. The fuel pump was replaced first, followed by the throttle body being cleaned, both unsuccessful fixes. Most of the time the car runs, idles fine. It seems to stall mostly when the foot is off the accelerator to make a turn, or when in traffic, and the accelerator is depressed and then let off to move forward in traffic. The rpm jumps up to maybe 2000rpm, drops to below 500rpm and then to zero. Occassionally the engine will "recover" and the rpm will jump up. Normal rpm is around 700 rpm. There is no check engine light on. Also seems to stall when engine is cold or maybe a bit more when warm.

    ETM S80 2000

Sounds like your due for replacement. When they fail, your idle goes all over the place. Sometimes, cleaning will solve the problem for a bit, then it usually goes back.
Do you notice hesitation? On the highway, does it hold back?

      ETM S80 2000

I don't notice any hesitation on acceleration or holdback on the highway. Wouldn't a problem with the ETM throw out a code?

        ETM S80 2000

Not all ETM problems throw codes, but your idle speed should be in the 900rpm range. If it goes down and stays down when you put the car in gear, the ETM should compensate.

    Engine stalling S80 2000

I would have all vacuum and PCV lines replaced pronto, and check for vacuum leaks throughout intake system using propane, esp around intake gasket. Do a search of the forum for a more detailed description of how to accomplish this. Don't bother 'checking' it, as it is nearly as much work to check every line as it is to replace it, and it's damn near impossible to 'see' a vac leak as even lines that appear okay may leak or collapse, and also brand new line is very cheap. I have taken to splitting the old line up one side and wrapping it around the new line to act as a heat shield.

I would also have your trans fluid changed. I have an inkling that this type of stalling could be linked to the torque converter lockup system hiccupping, though I have no way to prove it :) Unless you know you've got good fluid in there, change it. The forum has much info on how to do this as well.

I would also do a thorough cleaning of the intake system using water/steam and seafoam. A search of the forum will also turn up info on how to perform this 'water torture' treatment.

Get your intake plumbing redone first.
