1997 R engine replaced by 98 GLT engine. Good idea or bad?

I'm FINALLY getting ready to get my 850R wagon going. I towed it to Dallas...am about to tear into the engine and found a 98 S70 GLT wrecked with an engine with only 8K miles on it. I have looked up all the information I can find and from what I can tell the only difference in the engines is the higher pressure turbo, ECM and maybe the intake. I am going to have to replace at LEAST 8 valves in my motor as well as the entire PCV system, gaskets, etc. I'm sure the wiring is different on the 98 but I'm not really worried about that. If this were to ever be a collector car, I would worry about the correct numbers, etc. I don't ever plan on it being...so the new engine seems to make sense to me.
Thoughts? Ideas???

If you do the swap, the 850 will just be relegated to the back of your nice garage, behind the other cars. The 2.4L engine does put out 200bhp, but nothing like the 240bhp of the R engine. And don't even think of putting on a larger turbo, the engine internals cannot handle it.

The R engine has special porting on the intake and exhaust to get more bhp. It would be worthwile to repair the head and fix it. The oil separator needed to be replaced anyway, along with all of the vacuum lines.

I think you will be happier with a true R than taking the badge off the rear.

Weeellll...it's never going to be another R with that engine. It's probably possible to do the swap, but you'll have to take the ECU and the turbo from the smaller one as well. The GLT engines are essentially just the N/A engine with a small turbo put on it, and they just can't handle the boost from the big turbo on the T5/R models. The 2.3L engines have better connecting rods, sodium-filled valves, etc. to handle the extra heat and increased compression ratios from the turbo.

Well... Showed me...LOL. I DEFINITELY want it to remain an R...so off to the rebuild shop the head goes. I have looked on the parts sites and most of the valves available are all the same for the car. Is there something special I should look for? Excuse my ignorance, but I'm finding that this is a very special car...

Looking at IPDs nice list of goodies:

        http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Engine/Engine-Mechanical/Engine-Valves/p-72-153-168-5381/

I would give them a call, Pacific time, and ask if the turbo valves are different. And do people really buy the cheap stuff? For a valve job?

It's not that I want to be cheap about it at all. I am in the process of establishing a new busines..and in this economy...
I talked to IPD. He said the TRW valves are of the same quality in his opinion as the Volvo version. I am putting a new water pump, tensioner, etc in even though the ones in the car have only 10K miles on them. I'm not even sure how long I will keep this car as I really want to get back into a 960 if I get another Volvo.
This little wagon is AWFULLY sweet though...
