As I am releasing the key back from the ignition position the starter kicks in for a second.
That is an indication that the electrical part of the ignition is worn out. This is easy to replace once you have the 2 plastic halves off the steering column.
The noise is a problem, there should be none. If it clicks when you turn the key, that indicates a power problem which could be a loose electrical connection at the starter or battery.
If you hear a high pitched whirr and crunching sound - STOP - you need a new starter! The gears are not connecting properly with the flywheel and will riun the flywheel which is a very costly repair.
