Coolant smell with the heat turned on V70-XC70 1998

I have a 1998 V70 AWD with 110,000 miles. I just replaced the ABS module and the cabin air filter based on the messages on this board. But now that I have turned on the heat I get a whiff of coolant smell when I turn the heat on. It's for just a moment but it is irksome because it smells like a beater for that instant. Any advice?

Just drop the kick panel under the dash and take off the cover plate to the right of the gas pedal. The car is driveable like that, no problems. That gives you a nice inspection point to look at the bottom of the heater core.

It probably is not leaking a lot now, but it will. You do not want to take off the heater lines to the firewall, that is a painful procedure! But removing the core is easy. There is no need to remove the glovebox either, as per volvospeed. If you are as slow as I am, 4 hours start to finish. Have a plastic baggie without holes to catch any coolant that will dribble out of the lines :)

Ditto on brakes/rotors. A very easy job. The only complaint I have is from the UPS delivery guy because of the weight of the rotors!!! If your rotors don't have a large lip on the outside edge, the rotors probably don't need to be replaced.

You've probably got the classic leaky heater core...they all leak at some point, mine included. Feel the carpet under the footwells. If it is wet, you should probably go ahead and replace it. Between these and the evaporator on these things, the climate control is a piece of junk.

It looks like a pretty easy job on these cars - there is a write-up for you here:

Order some new O-rings to connect at the firewall while you're at it.

Thanks for the referral to the volvospeed write up. I was hoping it was going to be something simple and not the leaky heater core.

I am new to working under the hood. The ABS module replacement was an odyssey for me, but I did manage to get it done. I just had the snow tires put on and the guys said front brakes and rotors. And I said just put the snows on. The coolant smell bugs me just enough to make me tackle it.

Believe me, it's much easier on one of these cars than an old Saab 900 or BMW 2002, both of which I or my dad have changed multiple times.

Rotors and brake pads can be changed by yourself much cheaper than paying a shop to do it. Not a very hard job either, just a lot of roughhousing required ;)

        Good luck! =)
