Noise vibration V70-XC70 2001

I am rewriting this as I was informed this went on the RWD questions accidently. Hope this goes to the FWD forum now.

I have a 2001 V70 w/ an annoying noise vibration heard from inside the car at low speeds and Hwy speeds 60 mph-up. We tried to find it while driving but can`t. Any advise out there ??? We just someone is asked about the glove box but no dice, thanks. Any other of these cars that have the same problem? Any other ideas on what we can do to eliminate ? THANKS

    Re: Noise vibration V70-XC70 2001

    Hi there,

I think I know where your noise is coming from - I have the exact same issue. Under the engine compartment is a plastic "belly-pan" cover that protects the engine and also has some integrated NACA ducts for cooling. This cover is secured with approx. 5 or 6 bolts to the frame of the car. Everytime I go in for an oil change I have to crawl under the car to make sure that they fully tightened the bolts. While I was tightening the last time I decided to tap on it to see if it was loose and long and behold I heard that annoying vibrating sound. There are a few "touch-points" that cause the cover to vibrate when the engine is at very low rpm or under a lot of load under low rpm. So what I did to fix it was simply add some aluminum spacers around the outer edges between the cover and the frame - guess what the vibration is now gone....

    I hope this helps....

    Steve

      Re: Noise vibration S80 Too V70-XC70 2001

      Steve,

I noticed the exact cause you mentioned ( the plastic pan hitting under the engine/transmission) on my 2000 S80. I stuffed some plastic foam between the pan and the touch points and it helped a lot. May try your solution next oil change. My noise is more prevalent when all is cold.

Alrighty then, This definitely looks like it needs looking into. I`ll check this this coming weekend and let you know if this is it. I hope so. And regardless, thanks a bunch for letting me know about what it was with your car so to check with mine.

Do you have a turbo model (T5 or GLT) or non-turbo? The non-turbo

models have a noisier exhaust that is kind of a droning sound heard

at lower speeds -- described as a motor boat type of quality.

Or, are you hearing specific rattles?

The glove box is the only noise in mine, so far. The only advice I can offer is to take your service manager or one of his techs for a ride.

Good luck. I traded my 245 kicking and screaming, but so far things have been great.

      Re: Noise vibration V70-XC70 2001

The glovebox rattle can be sometimes eliminated by placing a small piece of self adhesive foam around the latch. I found a sheet of it in the craft section of Walmart for $.99, and can make 400 repairs. So far the first piece has worked for over a year...

I too have the Glove box problem, and it is supposed to get fixed today by "greasing" the thing, according to my Volvo dealer in Scottsdale. I hope they know what they are doing. I had heard there was a different fix but they claim they know nothing.

        Sam

They don't build them like they used to, thanks Ford.
