S70 no start, recent new battery etc S70 1998

A month or so ago, someone rear-ended our 1998 S70 and we decided to take the insurance $$ and not repair the bumper, because the list of things is long enough on this car now that we don't want to put any more money into it. So bearing that in mind...

The car has 173k miles on it. Last year the battery was replaced. This summer I did the spark plus, rotor, distributor cap and SP wires - all OEM new. The lambda light has been on a while I keep clearing the codes but it comes back. FIxed a vacuum light but bad exhaust smell tells me that the O2 sensor is probably bad. THe car is only being used to drive around town these days we use the S40 on the highway mostly.

THe past week or 2 I have noticed hesitation before starting, and I also noticed when I drove it on the highway Monday that I got a hesitation a few times in 5th gear when speeding up (manual trans).

So, do you think this is the fuel pump, clogged fuel filter? Alternator? How can I find out? I don't have jumper cables or the other car here husband is out all day with the other car. Oh yeah and I have a bad cold and I just wanted to drive to the drug store for some cold medication so I can feel better!

    DONE!! It's starting now :)

Wheew that was more work than I anticipated but it wasn't so bad once I got brave enough to disconnect everything from the fan shroud and get that thing out of the way. Then there was room for socket extension so I could actually get some leverage.

I am writing up a summary is there somewhere here I can post it? I will post it on MVS too.

For a cold, hot chicken noodle soup and honey sweetened peppermint tea are all you need.

For the no start? Listen for the fuel pump when you turn the key to position II, it should humm for a couple of seconds while it primes the pressure.

A starter not turning is a different matter. It is due to a loose wire at the starter or the solenoid not working. My bet is on the latter.
When that happened to me, back in the good old days, I could use a long handled screwdriver to short the starter to ground and start the car. Neutral, switch on, parking brake on.

When the O2 sensor fails, the engine will run rich and slowly foul the plugs at low rpm. This could cause your hesitation.

      Thanks Klaus,

I think it is the starter - ordered a used on on eBay for $35, it will get here Wednesday and hopefully it will be easy to install - Haynes makes it sound pretty straightforward. Any tips?

I am hoping this car can get me through to next year, then I may replace it with a Toyota Yaris or something cheap, or maybe another 2001 - 0204 S40 if I can find one with as low miles and good condition as our other one!

Just make sure you disconnect the battery before you mess around down there - live wires!!! Make sure the connections are tight.

Nothing wrong with a cheap Toyota, but it is not a "highway" car for trips.

Help! I have the battery out and the platform underneath but I still can't find the starter motor. Ususally I just look for the part that looks like my new part! I have an article for the 850 that says remove the fan shroud, but I don't know exactly what that is or how to remove it. Are there picture tutorials anywhere online?

Haynes is useless it starts with "remove the bracket holding the starter in place". Yeah first find the starter!!

The starter is under the intake manifold, driver's side. The fan comes off with 2 torx screws and unplug the electrics - that's just to give you more room.

            I am looking for pics,

I ran out of daylight, will have to resume tomorrow. I took 2 torx screws out of the top area of fan but it seems to be fixed at the bottom still. I found the starter and removed the electrical connections but the bolt is too tight and I can't get leverage with no space in there... will have to try and get that fan out I guess.

I saw your post over on MVS. The bottom of the fan slides into holding brackets, so that once the torx screws are out you should be able to pull the fan up and out.

The starter bolts are a pain, they have been there for 10 years! Wear gloves so you don't get bleeding knuckles :) When putting the new starter on, thread the bolts by hand before you put a wrench on them.

                Good night,

Thanks Klaus - I didn't want to yank on the fan not knowing if there wre more connectors. So I pull up and then it will come out - got it. After work today I will resume "surgery"!

THank goodness for forums I would be lost with only Haynes! I got a little further today in that the fan shroud is almost out... found the extra 2 bolts 3" below the top ones shown in the picture previously posted. I tried and tried to get the starter bracket bolt loose but there is just no room to get any traction in there with the fan in the way.

Now I am trying to untangle the snare of cables that connect things up and only disconnect what I absolutely have to, to minimize my chance of forgetting to put something back in! There are several cable I cannot for the life of me figure out how to disconnect. Haynes just says "disconnect fan relay" etc. it does not say how/ which end!

Here are pics of the parts I am having trouble figuring out how to disconnect (please excuse the very dirty engine, this car goes down a dirt road to the horse barn almost every day):

Tried to jump the car today, nothing. Battery is fine, headlights bright etc but no turn over from the starter even after jump start for 5 minutes. So it could the the starter or the fuel pump right? Our 850 fuel pump gave out at about 200k miles, which is about the same as this car. However the starter is not cranking - does that mean it is the starter motor?

Any suggestions for diagnosing fuel pump vs starter?
