Ignition SW Problem S70 1998

When removing key the little chime keeps dinging indicating the key is supposedly is still inserted. With a little effort it is possible to get the switch in the key cylinder to return and the chime ceases. This is a problem on the mechanical side not the electrical.

Are there any cures short of a new key cylinder? I have used WD40 and compressed air with no luck. Wife's car so it needs to be 'perfect'.

Help appreciated before I order a cylinder,

dick

Before you order up that ignition cylinder, I'd recommend two things first. There is a bunch of interaction between the shift lock override and the ignition switch/cylinder assembly. They are connected with a cable. Be sure that the shift lock override button is absolutely in its "up" position. Tends to get sticky with coffee, crumbs, etc. Also be sure that the button inside the shifter itself fully returns. Secondly, it is very simple to remove the electrical portion of the ignition switch once the plastic covers are taken off from behind the steering wheel. This makes diagnosis straightforward, as you can see exactly what is happening.

That was the problem. Cleaned and inspected everything and also learned the cable connections. Not a wonder it would get stuck. Connections at the ign. sw. are few but those near the shifter are many. Gave it a slight shot of WD40 also.

Klaus, you are right and the Haynes manual is wrong re: the switch removal. Most thankful I didn't need to do it yet. Car only has 129K on it.

      Thanks again.

Thanks----there was an instance where the shift overide was used and then the ign. sw. started acting up. Will 'undress' the area and report back. I know which cable you are referring to.

Ouch! The lock is installed with break off screws, the screw head is design to break off after Xlbs of torque is applied. They must be drilled out, and it is hardened metal so the drilling takes a long time. A battery operated drill will not do it.

The lock must be ordered by the dealer, who then gets it from the factory. So there is a lead lime. The security code must be reprogrammed to accept the new keys, more money in the dealer pocket :)

DIY is difficult and you are only saving the labor cost. So call your dealer and ask the dollar hungry service techs how much it will cost and the hours of labor that covers. It will take you at least 45 minutes of drilling to get one bolt out, and there are 2. Install is fairly easy with new bolts.

You could look around for a nice S60, 2003+

Thanks for the info. The lock with two keys is $217 and according to my information the 98 and below are easily exchanged. The 99 and up are the tough ones. Will keep you informed on this.

"Tina" had hers broken also on her S70. She replaced it herself about a year or 2 ago. Do a search on tina.
