Any dealer can verify if your car has had the heat shield repaired.
If the leak is on the passenger side, then you probably have a cracked hose. There is a hose that goes from the tank, back up to the top of the filler tube to let air out while filling the tank. This tube tends to crack near the bottom.
Pulling off the wheel and inspecting is the only way to verify a leak. If you know what you are looking for, the wheel can be left on. It is not an expensive fix if you DIY. The inside rear side cover needs to come off to access the top of the filler tube. Do not use clamps from home depot, those will cut the tube when tightened, use hose clamps which are available at auto parts stores.
