1996 850 gas tank recall--still available? 850 1996

Hi, I found a helpful thread from 2005 in the archive, which is now closed, regarding Volvo recall #44940, pertaining to a leaking gas tank due to faulty heat shield. I filled my tank today, then as I walked around the car to check my tire pressure, I saw a puddle spreading beneath the car. My tank leaked about 2 quarts by the time I decided to limp it home. Googling "volvo gas tank leaking," I learned of the recall that Volvo issued in 2004.

I heard through an unverified source that car companies are not obligated to provide free repairs on recalled cars/auto parts on vehicles over 8 years old. I bought the car in 2007, and am the third owner. I plan to call the Volvo hotline tomorrow, as their Website only tries to sell new cars, not provide information about old ones, and is thus no help.

Assuming that my car is indeed a member of the lot of 226,000 cars included in the recall, do you think I stand a chance of getting this problem fixed free of charge? I really can't afford to have this done professionally and is way beyond my expertise and meager tool set. Do they honor recalls to third owners, five years after the fact? I love my Brick but having replaced the entire suspension and also rebuilt the cylinder head due to a seized valve within the last year, another large repair bill wouldn't be cost-effective.

How did Volvo respond to your leaking tank issue? I just found the same thing on my new to me 96 850. Thanks-DM

Sorry for the very tardy response; I don't have cause to come here very often (a tribute to the Volvo brand). I am recording this for posterity.

I called the 1-800 Volvo hotline and the operator was very helpful. After looking up my car's VIN, she ascertained that the recall work had been done by a previous owner. The recall is only good for one repair--I assume it's my fill tube or fuel pump housing that is leaking since the heat shield would have been fixed already. (Still haven't gotten around to fixing it, 3 years later.) She did, however, enroll me in the high-mileage club and send me a certificate and a badge verifying my 200,000 mile status!

You never did say where the leak is. There is a vent tube next to the filler tube that tends to crack and leak after a bunch of years. A leaking gasket at the fuel pump would send the fumes into the cabin, so I guess that is OK.

Any dealer can verify if your car has had the heat shield repaired.

If the leak is on the passenger side, then you probably have a cracked hose. There is a hose that goes from the tank, back up to the top of the filler tube to let air out while filling the tank. This tube tends to crack near the bottom.
Pulling off the wheel and inspecting is the only way to verify a leak. If you know what you are looking for, the wheel can be left on. It is not an expensive fix if you DIY. The inside rear side cover needs to come off to access the top of the filler tube. Do not use clamps from home depot, those will cut the tube when tightened, use hose clamps which are available at auto parts stores.

And in my case (and a few others) if it is on the passenger side and much worse with a full tank, it may be the fuel pump housing. Mine is cracked on top (new one on the way) and I lose copious amounts if I fill up...very little if any from 3/4 tank and less.

You don't need to be the first owner and the age shouldn't matter. For example, in 2005 I, as the third owner, received the letter for that recall and had my '94 850 serviced. So that should debunk the 8 year time limit and original owner ideas.

I don't have the paperwork in front of me (let me know and I'll dig it out of my file) but I recall that it was about the attachment points for the shield. The recall was to check the attchments and add rubber grommets to keep them from cracking.

Have you investigated where the leak is coming from? Perhaps it's the fill tube connection.

    Good Luck,
    Will

The recall is only for the heat shield but it has been extended until 12/31/09. Tic-Toc and I mean that for me. I have three of them to get in.

They will replace the heat shield but you are on your own with the leak.
