Loud clicking noise in either tranny or cv area V70-XC70 2004

My 04 V70 2.4 FWD has a loud clicking noise when going into D or R (not if I go from N to D or R twice in the same direction, though). I think this has been getting louder for many thousands of miles but am not sure as it is my wife's car and I don't drive it often. It has 92k on it. Tranny oil looks and smells good.

A mechanic put it on the lift and said there is play in both wheels. CV boots are fine, though. He thinks the right wheel is noisier than the left but that the noise radiates across the axle so it is hard to tell. He said he fears it is in the differential.

Before I have him pull the boots off and search for a bad c.v. joint, does anyone have any opinions or views on this? Thanks.

This is probably the same suspension noise I hear on the front end of my wagon.I was going to ask the same question about front=end suspension rattles.
Like maybe the sway bar links?
Ideas anyone.

Sway bar endlinks are easy to diagnose. Reach behind the wheel, grab the thin verticle bar and try to shake it. If it moves, replace it.
This could be the answer.

I doubt it is the CV joints if the 4 boots are intact, besides, they would rather click at slow speed.
It could be a tranny gear/differential gear problem. I would flush the tranny fluid first to see if that helps. Less than $100 DIY. It take 10-12 quarts of Mobile 3309 ATF, a hose, 3 gallon jugs, and a funnel.

Also check the engine mounts; top, front, and tranny mount.

Hello, I've had the same noise in my 2002 over 23,000 miles of ownership. The car has 93K and has only gotten a bit worse lately. For 68,000 miles I had the same noise, which never changed, in a 1999. The people at a local dealership offered no suggestion, diagnosis or inspiration when I demonstrated it for them; that was the 1999. I'd love to get a handel on this problem and fix it together with new springs and struts when the time comes. For heaven's sake, the damn click/knock sounded the same in both my cars and the lunkheads at a dealership won't even hustle a repair. Kira
