Do Air Mass Meters go bad after a year??? S70

My 1998 S70 non-turbo is running rough again. A year and half ago, I had somewhat of the same issue which ended up being the Mass Air Meter. I replaced it and everything turned out great. Now, I have had the same issue, but not as bad. Can those Mass Meters go bad in only 1.5 years? I got it from
FCP Groton. I dont want to spend another couple hundred if it could be something else.
BTW, I have replaced the plugs, cap and rotor, which seemed to help for about 3 miles. If I unplug the AMM it still runs rough but drives. I will add that the day things went down hill, I washed out the engine a little to clean things up. I kept the water from the alternator, and let things dry up for a few hours before I started it. I hope that I didn't mess things up by rinsing it out?
If anyone has any information about this I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks

Remove the plastic cover plate over the spark plugs. Washing the engine is your problem, lots of water gets into the spark plug shafts. Do not pull the plugs with water in the shafts, that water will pour into the cylinders and could cause compression lockup, destroying a good engine.

Let the engine get nice and dry, then run it at high rpms to get everything nice and hot to evaporate the reamining water.

It took me 3 days on an 850T to get the engine running again.

Thanks Klaus, I have already changed the plugs. Its a hundred degrees outside now, and has had a few days to dry. If I continue to drive it will it slowly get better? Do you think I messed up the Air Mass Meter and need to replace it.
So much for keeping the engine clean...

With the engine off, you could unplug things looking for dampness. It is not the heat, it is the lack of humidity you are looking for. Water in the distributer cap is a remote possibility, the boot usually keeps that dry.

I don't believe you hurt the AMM/MAF unless you got a lot of water in the intake. Let the engine run for 20 minutes, close to home of course, and then let it sit and dry out.

I replaced the Mass Airflow, and it runs a little better, but there is still some times when it seems like its sputtering a little. If I let off the gas, it seems to catch and run fine until I press on the acclerater. Could the O2 sensor be bad? or another faulty mass airflow?
          What am I missing?

Check your vacuum lines, one may have dislodged a little with the cleaning? Also check the air intake line at the throttle body and make sure it is tight. The covers on the vacuum tree need to be inspected.

Just as an FYI the problem was simply the plug wires. I decided to check the resistance, and the #1 wire had a resistance of over 18,000 ohms. Put 5 new wires on, put the old mass airflow back on, returned the other one, and I am back in business!
Thanks Klaus for all the help!
