Leaking fuel tank: cont'd V70-XC70 1999

Hi All again,

First, thanks a lot to all those who replied to my earlier thread on this problem with helpful clues and advice!

The not-so-exciting story with the tank goes on, since my mechanic found out that the filler neck of the tank is cracked! The 2-sided tank, i.e. the whole assembly, is made of plastic, and it needs to be replaced now. I can't think of anything that might have caused this to happen. The car has never been in a slightest accident so far. The crack at the very top of the tank certainly explains well why the problem with smell and leaks came back always right after each re-filling with gas.

As unusual as it seems and as unpleasant as it is, I'm waiting while they are getting the replacement tank. I would like to try to pursue it with Volvo further, since this seems to be clearly a manufacturer's defect, not officially recognized (there are no recalls on this) nor accounted for. The trouble may be that the repairs are done by an independent garage. They have a lot of experience with Volvos and other European cars, and I trusted them with my car for a while, being tired of the dealer's way. But Volvo may want to reject the case since the repair was not taken care of by the dealer. Can anybody think of a possible course of action that I may pursue to have Volvo investigate this problem and provide at least some remedy?

I will appreciate any advice and help, thanks in advance,

Anton.

    Anton,

Sorry to hear about your problem.

You can have your car serviced anywhere you like. The manufacturer has to prove that the indy mechanic caused the damage.

However, they can require that for new parts warranty coverage, you must have the dealer install the part. I believe that if your indy mechanic installs the part, there is no warranty. But, check on this to make sure.

Follow Doug's advice and contact NHTSA. This type of defect, if proven, seriously compromises the safety of occupants in the vehicle.

    Best of luck.

    Bryan

Re: Leaking fuel tank: cont'd V70-XC70 1998 AWD

In 1999, I had a leak at the expansion tank on my 98 V70 AWD that took over a week to get parts from Sweden. The NHTSA caught wind of this by reading over the newsgroups and this site and contacted me here in CT from Washington D.C. to get more info. They had been tracking reports of several gasoline leaks on these Volvos and were quite interested in seeing the tank, etc. Volvo sends the tank back to Sweden or somewhere for warranty purposes and I don't think the feds ever saw it. I was impressed that the NHTSA even read this internet stuff. Do you wanna raise some eyebrows? Report your incident here:

      Doug

What does a leaky expansion tank have to do with a gasoline

leak. The expansion tank consists of coolant for the engine.

I have never heard of a fuel expansion tank.

Re: Leaking fuel tank: cont'd V70-XC70 1998 AWD

In the 1998 V70 AWD, there IS a fuel expansion tank located above the main fuel tank that has been known to leak. It is usually near where a nipple is formed that attaches to a hose. It leaks when the main fuel tank is filled up. Mine leaked all over my garage floor. This is a plastic tank and apparently there were injection molding problems on a batch. The NHTSA doesn't like fires.
