my hubby changed the timing belts on our 850 (2.5 20 valve) marked it up and realined and fitted new belts started engine sounded as if knocked a couple of valves so switched it off double checked everything and seemed ok and marks seemed to aline but now wont restart could it be that the valve timing is 1 notch retarted on either exhaust or inlet, or both or could it be that i foolishly chose to use a non geniuine volvo replacment belts this time as the car has done 220,000

The belt is not your problem. The installation is, sounds like you have bent valves from an incorrect timing belt installation. Only repair is to replace the head with a rebuilt head.
