Why Exhaust Smell through Interior Vents? S70 1998

98 S70, 125K. It just started emitting exhaust odors through the HVAC vents, when idling at a traffic light. It doesn't do it on "Recirculation" mode, only when fresh air is selected. I have changed the cabin air filter and the "flap" under it works fine. I can't figure this out, as it seems that the only place the air enters the HVAC system is on top of the cowl, where the cabin air filter is. The cowl is sealed to the hood, so it seems unlikely that underhood odors could be getting in. I don't see or smell any fumes with the hood open & idleing. I have checked the intercooler, piping, turbo, exhaust manifold, etc and do see, smell or feel any leakage. I do not see or hear any exhaust leaks anywhere along the length of the exhaust system. I am stumped.......

Your PCV system needs cleaning. Check the vacuum line connection behind the power steering pump, under the intake manafold. Very hard to locate.

Why Exhaust Smell through Interior Vents? S70 1998

I did the PCV system at 123K (2K ago). Intake off, new Oil Trap, all hoses and clamps, etc., from FCP. The exhaust odor, coming from the dash vents, just started. I checked all the PCV system and exhaust system last evening (as well as possible). I replaced the cabin air filter, checked fresh air flap, cowl grille. All clear and fine. The PCV hoses and clamps all seem secure, No odor noticed under hood with engine idleing, but exhaust smell is present at dash vents, if set to outside air. That's why I am baffled....

Double check the rubber gasket between the hood and the air intake. It sometimes rolls over and looses its seal. It must be tight.

The 850's had a problem with the rear vents loosing the rubber flaps, allowing air to come in from the rear and out the open drivers window while moving down the road.

Hi Klaus, the hood to cowl seal looks real good. What rear vents are you referring to? Are they the ones behind the bumper sides? I can only smell the exhaust fumes through the dash vents (or defrost, etc depending on mode selected) when set to "outside air" setting. No fumes when set to "recirculation".

For air to flow through the cabin, it exhausts behind both rear wheels. You cannot find it without a lot of digging.

You also need to check the cowl seal all the way across the car to the fuses. It can slip up and then crimp. Look at the hood to verify contact, you will see where the strip makes contact or looses contact.
